#Singapore-flagged Container Ship ‘Nawata Bhum’ Collides with Riverbank Near Diamond Harbour

Kolkata/Diamond Harbour: A Singapore-flagged container ship, MV Nawata Bhum, has reportedly collided with the riverbank in the Hooghly River near Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. According to available reports, the vessel was heading towards Kolkata Port and lost control while attempting to take a turn near Nurpur Ferry Ghat, following which the ship collided with the riverbank.
The collision reportedly caused damage to a portion of the riverbank. As per preliminary information, there have been no reports of any casualties. However, the exact reason behind the vessel losing control remains unclear, and the incident is under investigation. Some local reports have also mentioned strong tidal currents and turbulent conditions in the Hooghly at the time of the incident, but this has not been officially established as the cause of the accident.
Nawata Bhum is a container vessel with IMO No. 9365685. The vessel operates under the Singapore flag and is approximately 148 metres long, with a gross tonnage of around 9,917 and a container capacity of approximately 1,108 TEU. The vessel is associated with Regional Container Lines (RCL).

U.S. Attack on Three Merchant Vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, Crews Instructed to Abandon Ships!

Amid rising maritime tensions in the Strait of #Hormuz , reports of a U.S. military attack during the night of September 8–9 have made the situation even more serious. According to the information received, three merchant vessels attempting to head toward Iran came under a U.S. military attack in the region.
According to the information, U.S. aircraft attacked the engine rooms of the vessels, disabling them. Before the attack, the crews of the vessels were instructed to abandon the ships within a specified time limit. The attack was subsequently carried out to prevent the vessels from continuing their movement.
The development comes at a time when military activity and risks to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz are continuing to increase. Earlier, @UK_MTO had also reported an incident involving a merchant vessel on September 8, stating that the vessel was subject to an #interactio as part of ongoing military activity in the region.

Amid rising maritime tensions in the Gulf region, reports have emerged of another serious incident. According to sources, the crude oil tanker MT NOXEN was allegedly subjected to action by the U.S. Navy. Following the incident, one crew member is also reported to be missing. However, no immediate official confirmation regarding the incident has been issued by U.S. military authorities or any other concerned agencies.
According to preliminary information received from sources, the incident is related to MT NOXEN (IMO No. 9189146). According to available maritime records, the vessel bearing IMO No. 9189146 is a crude oil tanker.
According to sources, the incident reportedly occurred on 5 September 2026 at around 08:50 local time. The preliminary information places the location of the incident at approximately 25°48.8 minutes North latitude and 57°00.2 minutes East longitude.
However, no official details have yet emerged regarding the identity, nationality, or the circumstances surrounding the missing crew member.

An FIR has been registered at Sahid Nagar Police Station in Odisha in connection with the mysterious disappearance of Indian Deck Cadet Sarthak Mohapatra from MV EA Jersey, a #vessel associated with Anglo-Eastern Ship Management. The accused has currently been listed as #Unknown in the FIR.
According to the documents, Sarthak Mohapatra went missing from MV EA Jersey on 3 February 2026. An FIR has been registered under Section 140(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, and an #investigation has been initiated.
In the detailed complaint submitted by Sarthak’s mother, a probe has been sought into the role of the Managing Directors and responsible officials of Anglo-Eastern Ship Management Ltd., Hong Kong, and Anglo-Eastern Ship Management (India) Pvt. Ltd.
The complaint has also sought an investigation into the role of Ian Dubash, named as Anglo-Eastern’s HR Representative in Singapore; Panjari Irfan Ibrahim, named as the Master/Captain of MV EA Jersey; Chief Officer DSA Clyde Herald; the vessel owner; and other officers and crew members who were present on board at the time of the incident.
The family has raised serious questions regarding the whereabouts of Sarthak’s mobile phone, the examination of CCTV records, the alleged failure to seal his cabin, and other potential electronic evidence. The complaint also states that following the incident, the vessel proceeded from Singapore to China.

Sonipat/New Delhi. The family is deeply concerned following information that Indian seafarer Jaideep Antil, a resident of Murthal in Haryana’s Sonipat district, has gone missing at sea. According to a letter sent to the family by the shipping company Anglo-Eastern Ship Management (India) Private Limited, Jaideep Antil was on board the vessel ONE CRANE and was reported missing while the ship was approaching the Yangshan Anchorage in China on August 25, 2026.
According to the letter sent to the family, Jaideep Antil had joined the vessel ONE CRANE on January 7, 2026. As per the information received by the company, he was found to be missing at around 4:15 PM local time on August 25, 2026. A search was subsequently initiated on board the vessel, but he could not be found.
According to the letter, the company’s principals have also informed the MRCC and VTS, and search and rescue operations are being carried out in the area. The company has assured the family that they will be informed as and when any further information becomes available.
According to the family members, Jaideep’s father had passed away earlier. His family includes his mother and one sister. Jaideep’s mother is employed. Following the news of her son going missing at sea, the family is in deep shock and distress.
The family now hopes that Jaideep Antil will soon be traced through the ongoing search and rescue operations at sea.

Alleged Attack on MT MEGINA: IMO Should Take Immediate Cognizance Seafarers Are Not Criminals, They Deserve Safety and Protection!
#Seafarers working at sea are not criminals in any country. They live thousands of miles away from their families and play a vital role in keeping global trade and the world economy moving. Therefore, if the reports of an alleged pirate attack, gunfire, and assault on the crew of MT MEGINA are true, this serious incident deserves immediate international attention.
Reports have emerged of an alleged attack by armed men on board MT MEGINA near #Shinas Port, #Oman. According to information reportedly received from the families and crew members on board, armed individuals allegedly boarded the vessel, opened fire, assaulted crew members, and severely attacked the Master.
The biggest question now is: Who will take responsibility for the safety and lives of these 20 #seafarers working at sea?
Seafarers are neither criminals nor parties to any conflict. They are simply doing their jobs at sea to earn a livelihood and support their families. If a ship's crew is subjected to such an attack and their lives are placed at risk, the matter cannot simply be ignored as a local incident.
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and other relevant international maritime safety authorities should take cognizance of the matter, facilitate a thorough investigation, and coordinate with the concerned countries and authorities to ensure the safety and protection of the crew.
Seafarers should not be treated like criminals. They should be recognized as hardworking maritime professionals who have the right to human safety, dignity, and protection at sea.
The time has come for this matter to be taken seriously because Seafarers Are Not Criminals.

Breaking News: Tragic #Accident at Sea, Bihar’s Third Officer Deepesh Kumar Dies!
Marine Tanks | Patna: The news of the death of Indian Seafarer and Third Officer Deepesh Kumar from Bihar has come to light following a lifeboat accident onboard the vessel M.T. Megrez.
According to a letter sent to the family by Elegant Marine Services, affiliated with Fleet Management, the vessel was approximately 40 nautical miles south of the Cayman Islands when the starboard-side lifeboat was suddenly released. Deepesh Kumar was inside the lifeboat at the time of the incident.
The crew successfully recovered the lifeboat and found Deepesh Kumar in a critical condition. He was immediately provided with emergency medical assistance and CPR, but his life could not be saved.

India to Add 100 New Ships in 5 Years – Sonowal

New Delhi: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said at the National Shipping Board’s first ‘Sagar Samvad’ that India will add 100 new ships to its fleet over the next five years.
India spends around $75 billion every year on foreign shipping companies for transporting cargo such as crude oil, gas, coal and urea. The government’s objective is to strengthen the Indian fleet and reduce this foreign expenditure.
According to the NSB panel, Indian-flagged ships are 16–20% more expensive than foreign ships. To address this, a five-point solution has been proposed focusing on financial reforms, cargo support, competitive financing, regulatory facilitation and Ease of Doing Business.
The programme was attended by Sarbananda Sonowal, Mansukh Mandaviya and Shantanu Thakur, along with senior officials and experts from the maritime sector. Sonowal also launched the NSB website and released its annual report.
The programme also saw the participation of DGMA Director General Shyam Jagannathan, senior SCI official Capt. B.K. Tyagi, and Nautical Adviser (in-charge) Capt. S.I. Abul Kalam Azad, along with other senior maritime professionals.

Why Has the Safety Shield Around Iron Ore Fines Weakened?

22 Seafarers Missing, Questions for Port-Surveyor-MMD
A bulk carrier, MV Ocean Winner, carrying around 72,000 tonnes of Iron Ore Fines from Paradip, sank. Of the 24 Seafarers on board, 2 have been rescued, while 22 are still missing. The official cause of the accident has not yet been established, but serious questions have been raised over the loading of Iron Ore Fines and the safety system.
After the MV Asian Forest and MV Black Rose accidents in 2009, the Merchant Shipping Notice No. 9 of 27 August 2010 made 100% PSC/FSI Inspection and MMD Clearance mandatory for vessels loading Iron Ore Fines. The Notice also mentioned the dangers of excessive moisture and liquefaction.
But in the DGS Circular No. 2 of 31 May 2017, the requirement for 100% PSC/FSI Inspection and MMD Clearance was removed. The Circular bears the signature of Vikrant Rai, and the document states that it was issued with the approval of the Director General of Shipping.
Now the direct question is—if the risk associated with Iron Ore Fines had not disappeared, why was the additional layer of safety removed?
And when the world is today placing greater emphasis on monitoring and risk assessment for sensitive bulk cargoes, why was this system relaxed in India?
The 2017 Circular itself states that loading should not be undertaken during heavy rain. It also states that the interval between moisture testing and loading should not be more than seven days and that there should be no rain during this period, or the cargo should be protected from rain.
So now the questions are—
How was the cargo on MV Ocean Winner loaded during the rainy season?
What was the moisture content?
When was the TML certificate issued?
Who carried out the sampling?
Was the sample representative?
Was a re-test conducted after the rain?
What was the condition of the stockpile drainage and rain protection?
What did the Surveyor verify?
What did the Port inspect?
What did the MMD check?
The 2017 rules also provide that if information is received regarding high moisture, the MMD Surveyor can board the vessel, conduct an inspection and submit a report to the Principal Officer.
Therefore, the questions are not only for the Master—they concern the entire safety chain of the Shipper, Laboratory, Surveyor, Terminal, Port and MMD.
Today, 22 Seafarers are missing. Does it matter if they are not from India? At sea, nationality does not matter; human life does.
The investigation should not only examine why the vessel sank. It should also establish under what process around 72,000 tonnes of Iron Ore Fines were loaded onto the vessel and who verified what during that process.
Marine Tanks sought the response of the PO MMD Kolkata, but he declined to comment and asked us to speak to DGMA. Meanwhile, according to sources, MMD Kolkata has appointed two officers to conduct an investigation.
Now the country wants to know—
Will the safety system for Iron Ore Fines changed in 2017 also be investigated?
Because before fixing responsibility after an accident, it is essential to establish what happened at each level of the safety system before the accident occurred.

Today, amid the tensions in the Middle East, dozens of Indian seafarers have lost their lives.
But sadly, except for one or two families, most families have still not received their rightful PNI Insurance benefits.
The question is not just about the insurance amount.
The question is about those families whose earning member has gone to sea on duty and will never return.
When a seafarer goes onboard a ship, he contributes not only to his family but also to the country’s Maritime Economy. So, when he does not return, why should his family be left alone to fight for what is rightfully theirs?
Marine Tanks’ clear demand is that the family of every seafarer who has lost his life must receive every legal and rightful entitlement, on time.
We are not accusing anyone, but we will certainly raise the voice of the families. Because after a seafarer is gone, the responsibility for his family does not belong only to his family it belongs to the entire society.
If we do not speak for these families today, then whom will we speak for tomorrow?
Seafarers are not alone.

Why Relax the Rules for Older Ships? Questions Raised After a 28-Year-Old Panama-#Flagged Ship Sank off Odisha!

The Panama-flagged bulk carrier MV Ocean Winner (IMO 9145530) sank about 240 nautical miles off the Paradip coast of Odisha on August 22. The ship was built in 1998 and was approximately 28 years old. There were 24 crew members on board at the time of the incident. So far, two crew members have been rescued, while the search for the remaining crew members is underway. The actual cause of the accident is still under investigation.
The incident comes at a time when India is pushing for changes in age-related regulations to increase tonnage in the Indian Ship Registry and bring more ships under the Indian Flag. The government’s objective is to expand the Indian fleet, reduce dependence on foreign flags, and establish India as a global shipping hub.
But the question is: Is it appropriate to relax safety requirements for older ships in the race to bring more ships under the Indian Flag?
The sinking of MV Ocean Winner at the age of 28 makes this debate even more serious. Although it would not be correct to consider the ship’s age alone as the cause of the accident, the incident certainly raises questions about its structural condition, class status, inspection, maintenance, and safety compliance. Available vessel records also identify Ocean Winner as a 1998-built Panama-flagged vessel.
In a conversation with Marine Tanks, a senior former official associated with DG Shipping made a sharp comment on the entire policy, saying:
#Shipowner’s interest always trumps poor seafarers.
Although this is the opinion of a former official, the question behind the statement is serious: When a policy is framed to bring older ships under the Indian Flag, whose interests should be given the highest priority the shipowner’s or the safety of the seafarers working on board?
India certainly needs to expand its merchant fleet, but more ships under the Indian Flag must also mean greater safety. Before providing any relaxation in regulations for older ships, it is essential to ensure that not the age of the ship, but its actual seaworthiness and crew safety remain the decisive standards.

Panama-Flagged Cargo #Ship Sinks at Sea!

The Panama-flagged cargo vessel MV Ocean-Winner, which had sailed from Paradip Port, reportedly sank in the Bay of Bengal, around 240 nautical miles off the Odisha coast. The vessel had departed Paradip for Singapore at around 10:30 PM on August 20, carrying approximately 1,700 tonnes of iron ore.
According to sources, the vessel had been out of communication for around 24 hours. A total of 24 crew members were reportedly on board. As per the available official information, the crew comprised 20 Chinese, 3 Myanmar and 1 Bangladeshi national.
Following information about the vessel’s sinking, the Indian Coast Guard and Indian Navy have launched a Search & Rescue Operation. Nearby vessels have also been alerted to assist in the operation.
Official confirmation regarding the current status of the crew and the cause of the incident is awaited.
