Goldstein Liberal Tim Wilson @TimWilsonMP has a feature profile piece up in the Age/SMH newspaper "Good Weekend" mag.
To benefit everyone's time on this self indulgence exercise - thread here on key extracts & key fact checking which the journo Deborah Snow overlooked 🧵 #auspol
Dave, you've responded to a detailed fact check by introducing an entirely different argument.
Whether government should be smaller is an interesting discussion. It just isn't the discussion we were having.
We were discussing whether your description of Australia's economic history in a 90 second clip was accurate.
It wasn't.
What I think is extraordinary isn't that you got things wrong. Everyone does. It's that you've conceded precisely nothing.
Not one factual error. Not one correction. Not one "Fair enough, I got that wrong".
You have a remarkable ability to turn economic fiction into confident public performance. The problem isn't just the mistake. It's that once the performance is over, the fiction is simply left behind for your audience to keep repeating.
You haven't acknowledged that you confused government debt with the Future Fund. Your reply now explains how the Future Fund grew from around $60 billion to $255 billion which is a baffling addition, given you previously spoke about it as though it had ceased to exist.
You haven't acknowledged that you claimed the GFC stimulus was funded by the Future Fund. Or that your broader account of Australia's response to the GFC was wildly misleading.
Instead, you've simply changed the subject, which is a perfectly respectable debating tactic, provided nobody remembers what the original discussion was about.
When the errors are painstakingly explained, you don't correct the record. You simply move on, leaving the misinformation behind for your audience to repeat as though it were true.
I’m reminded of a line from Jackson Lamb in Slow Horses - Explaining this to you has become rather like trying to explain Norway to a dog.
My latest words in The Shot.
"The largest contributors to the breakdown of social cohesion in Australia are the governments of Australia, practising a privileged fuck-you version of democracy that makes its own rules & caters for those within the club"

"The alleged outrage was at its core, manufactured recreational grief-bait."

@AlboMP Except nobody from "the bush" is actually there
It's populated by mining industry acolytes, local government sycophants, city media, and politicians in Abkubras so shiny brand new they look like they've been taken from their mother too young

Behold the Perfumed Warlord propogating his most audacious con - the great Friends Of America myth
Here he is, grovelling over a gluttonous nation led by white supremacists, mercenaries, drunks and wife beaters
Like watching an obese dog trying desperately to lick its own arse

@TimWilsonMP@SBSNews@Tony_Burke Hi Timmy
I know this isn't a Dan Murphy's carpark, but I'll let you in on a little secret anyway - teachers do work from home. So do some nurses. It's a post-covid world, you might have even heard of it
I'd tell you to jog on, but we all know how that ended last time

Tim Wilson on #AfternoonBriefing refuses to say whether he agrees with Barnaby Joyce that the Liberals should withdraw from Net Zero & the Paris agreement. Surely #Goldstein deserves better than this. What an imbecile. #abc
Whoa! I’m being told by Jillian Segal that if I criticise Israeli land grabs or violence against Palestinians I’m talking anti-semitism. But her husband’s family trust is funding anti-Palestinian, anti-immigrant campaigns & opposition to welcome to country https://t.co/KmSZDiE6t5
Here's some more unsafe, inflammatory, racist public statements partly funded by Jillian Segal's husband - contributing to racist tropes and destroying social cohesion in Australia.
Australia's own anti-semitism envoy has helped fund public racism.
#pffffft
Here's some more racist hate speech Jillian Segal and her husband's company helped fund.
Racist, inflammatory advertising targeting social workers working with specific ethnic groups. Advance spreading lies and racist narratives about Arab-Australians.
Who is "unsafe" exactly?
Here's an advertisement Jillian Segal & her husband John Roth helped finance with their $50,000 donation to Advance.
This Advance propaganda paints immigrants as rapists and pedophiles.
All while Jillian Segal has the gobsmacking gall to lecture Australians about hate speech.
#pffffft
All attacks on our communities are abhorrent, everyone has a right to feel safe and we must all stand together against any forms of hatred and bigotry.
To this end, the Aust Human Rights Commission (AHRC) already has a National Anti-Racism Framework that rightly centres First Nations, applies a human rights lens, protects free speech, treats all communities equally and includes guidance across government, education, media and other sectors. This should be implemented.
Antisemitism has been systematically weaponised to silence criticism of Israel in Australia against journalists, students, athletes, artists, as well as denials of entry to the US, attacks on the UN, judicial bodies, officials, judges and, in recent days, rapporteurs.
These attempts to impugn and silence people for critical human rights advocacy to prevent or stop genocide, apartheid, forced starvation and ethnic cleansing, are now a breach of Australian discrimination law.
The Federal Court of Australia recently entered two principles into law per Stewart J: just as it is not antisemitic to criticise Israel, so too, is it antisemitic to blame all Jewish people for (or conflate them with), the actions of Israel.
This legal guidance should inform any media coverage, public commentary, and work going forward.
Importantly, since the July 2024 ICJ advisory opinion on racial segregation and apartheid in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, anyone supporting illegal settlements or discriminatory Israeli policies is, in fact, supporting racism.
It would be impossible for anyone supporting racial segregation or apartheid to be involved in anti-racism policy. One self-evidently cannot attack racism, by supporting racism.
The essence of multiculturalism and the bedrock of our national vision of social cohesion is equal rights and treatment for all communities.
Which is exactly what the AHRC Framework is designed to do.
‘Asked on the ABC on Thursday to list some of the changes that she would make to the reporting of public news broadcasters, Segal adamantly refused to give a single example, despite being repeatedly pressed to do so by the ABC’s Sarah Ferguson.
The following morning Segal was interviewed on the ABC’s Radio National Breakfast and pressed on the same issue, where she finally relented and gave one single example of absolutely breathtaking ridiculousness.
“Six months ago or so,” Segal said, “the ABC ran a story repeatedly about a hospital in Gaza that had been bombed. And there was incomplete information, as there is only perhaps information emanating from Hamas, but it was alleged to be, the ABC reported as fact, that it had been bombed by Israel. And then horrified people were upset and the Jewish community was looked at with disgust and worse. And then it turned out indeed that it was not bombed by Israel, that it had been from Gaza itself, and it had been a bomb that had fallen short.”
Segal appears to be referring to one of the early bombings of the al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital, which occurred not six months ago but in October of 2023. Israel and various western institutions claimed the hospital was accidentally bombed by Palestinian forces while analysts like Forensic Architecture say the attack came from Israeli forces, accusing Israel of peddling misinformation about the strike. Since that time Israel has deliberately demolished Gaza’s health infrastructure with hundreds of attacks on healthcare facilities, and the al-Ahli Hospital has been bombed no fewer than eight separate times.”
