We received our acceptance letter to the US refugee program in early October 2025 and I bought this sweater anticipating our new lives in a nation that promises liberty as a fundamental right. My patriotism for the nation that made it possible to escape our situation has been steadfast ever since. I’ve studied the geography, followed the politics, explored the traditions and memorised the pledge of allegiance.

Each day for the past eight months, I open my wardrobe, hoping the day will come when I get to proudly wear the Stars and Stripes. Sadly, it won’t be America’s 250th, but I sure hope it will be Thanksgiving.

Tonight the Eiffel Tower is lighting up with a "USA 250" display beginning Friday, July 3rd at 11:00 PM local time, marking the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence.

The illumination shows "USA 250" in red, white, and blue lettering across the tower's first-level facade.

The lighting is part of a wider summer program organized by the City of Paris celebrating the historic friendship between France and the United States

I can’t let this go unchallenged.

That young man was, in my opinion and based on the video below, the clear victim of an assault.

The video shows, for reasons that are entirely beyond my comprehension, the officer steaming directly into the victim.

The officer made no effort to prevent the attack or apprehend the men who had just administered the violence.

What I see in the video is the officer using speed and aggression at the moment of peak danger and confusion against the victim.

The victim then controls himself the moment he realises it is now a police officer attacking him and not one of the multiple men who were attacking him a fraction of a second earlier.

In my opinion Birmingham Police should drop the charges against this young man and ask the officer why she went for the victim on the ground and not the attackers!
