This is an experimental piece of writing that begins to imagine the inner world of a Japanese temple priest. It is an attempt to think of new ways to write lives. I'd love to hear any feedback you all might have!

@LiLan01677566 @MacRelStuds @James_A_Benn @Jessey_Choo おめでとう御座います！
It's been so much fun going on this journey with you Dr. Li!

@AOHSUsometimesY Great for interviewing though because you can read the room as you ask the question. If things go off the rails you still have time to bring it back. "Buddhism in Japan is a total scam! Is something I've heard said but obviously don't agree with." Not at all awkward in Japanese.

Amulet for "overcoming" trauma. Spotted at a temple on the Chita peninsula. Wondering if people have seen any other omamori specifically relating to mental health.

Waiting at a bus stop in Fukuoka today and up walked a yakuza in sun glasses and a black suit (picture the rapper Pit Bull and make him Japanese). Suits down, lights a cigarette and starts blasting Carless Whisper on his phone. Some days are gifts.

I totally agree with @mclaughlin_levi that you can't do fieldwork in Japan without using Line, but what hasn't been talked about nearly enough is the need to master entire conversations that consist entirely of stickers.

@ChefReactions My buddy took me to his favourite place near his house in Komazawa (tokyo) and I had to stop him from talking after my first bite because it was so fucking good and I really needed to just be with myself for second...

In case you were wondering if the ridiculous one-word branding of universities was limited to North America. The professors in Japan hear your "WTF?" and raise you a "訳わからん!"

Every day, Tokyo poses this existential question: Would you rather have readily available, very clean pubic toilets OR
garbage cans?
You can only have one.
Choose wisely.

Heading to blockbuster now...

Anyone have this (rare) DVD? Hope to see it digitized in the near-future. #Japan #Shugendo #日本研究 ＃修験

So, Mark, how is it to be back in Tokyo? Has much changed? Nah, same old, same old.

[Mark Rowe @MarkMichaelRowe]

No, YOU'RE more a philosophy than a religion.

@AfroAsianMythos On my way!!!!

What if your goal is not to "be Japanese" or to make over 20 million yen a year, but simply to be able to communicate at a deep level with people about their lives?

[Mark Rowe @MarkMichaelRowe]

Was not expecting to see Edward Slingerland quoted in the NYT Magazine piece on Russel Brand, but there you go.
Tip of the hat to Flegenheimer for this gem: "downward-facing dogmatism."

@AfroAsianMythos @WuTangClan Happy Earth Strong Day, Dr. Evans. Congratulations on a masterful defence of your thesis yesterday and for always bringing the ruckus!
