Some days, I wonder what the point is.
The charity is small.
We’re not raising donations each day.

But then I came across these photos of Charlotte so young, so full of life.
And I remembered why.

She was only just 19 when brain cancer took her. I thought she had her whole life ahead of her.

And then I wondered - how many other children are having their photos taken right now, full of hope, not knowing what's to come?

How many will face what Charlotte did?

That’s when I knew I had to keep going.

My name was Charlotte. I lived in Brighton in the UK. I was 19. I’m no longer here because a brain tumour took me - Glioblastoma grade 4. I was only 16 when first diagnosed with grade 3 Anaplastic Astrocytoma but that mutated to the deadly grade 4 Glioblastoma. My mum and brother have been raising awareness and telling my story from the diary entries we made. Mum doesn’t have one for every day but she still tweets.

I struggle with December. It was your favourite month. You would take full control of decorating the tree. You weaved fairy lights in and out of the banisters, wrapped Miles' presents and made lists of the foods you liked.

Christmas 2012 was such a 'normal' year, with your uncle, grandfather and both grandmothers coming over to celebrate. You were so excited for Christmas and for your 16th birthday, which was in February. Most of all, you knew you only had a few months left until you left school.

Christmas 2013 was completely different. Your 'monster', as you called it, your grade three anaplastic astrocytoma brain tumour, was present. Thirty-two grueling days of standard NHS radiotherapy to your brain and spine left you exhausted. You couldn't eat any Christmas dinner. The radiotherapy had burnt your oesophagus and the metallic taste the radiotherapy had left meant most food tasted 'off'. When I put the decorations back under the eves that year I was already worried - would you be here for the next Christmas?

Christmas 2014 was a good Christmas. You were still here. The treatment was working well and some of the tumours on your spine had shrunk. As had the one on your brain stem, which was inoperable. We watched films, drank wine, ate chocolate, and we thought genuinely that things might be okay.

Christmas 2015. You were already losing your balance and falling over. You were pumped full of steroids because your original tumour had now mutated to a terminal grade four glioblastoma. You hated the way you looked. I knew that year, when I packed the decorations away, there would only be three people around the table in December 2016. I was right.

Christmas has never been the same since my daughter Charlotte passed. I will never get used to not having to buy presents for her. My son will never get used to losing his best friend.

Christmas Eve 2024 will be the 106th month without her and the ninth Christmas of staring at the empty chair when we have our Christmas dinner.

For my daughter Charlotte 18.2.1997 - 24.2.2016 who suffered intensely at the end of her journey with a grade 4 incurable brain tumour - glioblastoma.

Do you ever wonder when donating to a charity where all of your donation goes? Unlike the large charities we have no overheads, so we can tell you how 100% of your donation is spent. In March, we gave the team at King's College Hospital, London, £42,000 to be spent on an instrument to rapidly sequence DNA. Developed by Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT), below is a summary of what this instrument is capable of:

The instrument can determine the sequence of the DNA and the modified chemical groups attached to the DNA bases. We currently use two separate machines to do this, the DNA sequencer and EPIC arrays to look at modified DNA bases, this data is used to classify tumours. With ONT we have the chance to rapidly classify tumours, certainly within 24 hours and possibly within hours. The machine will also provide sequence data and depending on the quality of this data we may be able to use this as well. The ONT instrument therefore holds promise, in rapidly diagnosing a patient's tumour and possibly improving surgical outcomes by reducing the risk of irreversible brain damage. We are still at a very early stage but the first datasets being generated are looking promising.

To date we have raised £304,664.54, all of which has/will been/be donated to Charlotte's Lab, King's College Hospital. Included in the above amount is £19654.11 in our charity bank account. We are in discussion with King's as to where the money will be spent. I would like to thank the person/people who recently made an anonymous donation of £1942.00.
