On October 17, 2023, an airstrike targeted Al Ahli Hospital, which was sheltering thousands of displaced and wounded Palestinians 11 days into the Israeli onslaught on Gaza. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, the explosion killed 471 Palestinians and injured 342 others. However, Israel denied responsibility for the attack and instead blamed the Palestinian resistance. One year on, Israel has conducted hundreds of attacks on Gaza hospitals, resulting in the deaths of 42,400 Palestinians and leaving 23 of the 38 hospitals in the enclave completely non-operational, while the rest are only partially functioning.
