Today is May 22, 2023. For those who don’t know, ten years ago today sweet little Gabriel passed away. Some recognize May 24, 2013 as the day Gabriel was pronounced deceased. However, for me, for the jurors, for first responders, and based upon all the evidence we presented, we lost Gabriel the night of May 22, 2013
So, today and everyday, we remember the life of a little boy that deserved better from so many. Ten years may have gone by but our fight for justice is not over. Our commitment to Gabriel remains resolute. We will not fail him. His life matters.
So, what type of day was May 22, 2013? I bet it was a normal day for most children. Perhaps it was a day like this, a sunny day, when most happy children like to play with Legos, play with dolls, swing on swings, ride their bicycles, play hide and seek with their friends, play baseball, football, or soccer, tumble down grassy banks and laugh, and experience the freshness of life.
It’s so difficult to hear, but for Gabriel – May 22, 2013 was like every other day he experienced during the last eight months of his life – a day of darkness, another day of unrelenting torture and child abuse. It was also Gabriel’s grandfather’s birthday. Think about that? When others were eating cake and celebrating Robert’s birthday, Gabriel was being slowly tortured to death in that apartment. For 8 long months. Think about that?
When Gabriel needed it most, no one was there to hold him, to love him, to caress him, and to just tell him “everything will be alright.” To me, however, Gabriel will always be an example of courage. His case, his life, his death, and his trial will always be with his family, with my family, and with the community. No matter what any one person tries to do, he will never be forgotten. He has made me a better person, a better father, and a better prosecutor.
We love you Gabriel 💙
Today, I’m kicking off my campaign to restore public safety, bring transparency back to the people’s office, hold wrongdoers accountable, and make real – meaningful reforms in Los Angeles.
