If Nolan wanted to make a modernized version of The Odyssey that imposes modern psychology and preoccupations (not to mention racial demographics) onto an ancient epic, he could have done an interpretation set in the current day. There are many examples of that kind of thing. But transposing the modern mindset and worldview into the ancient world turns the whole thing into a farce, which is why a number of scenes look and feel like a Mel Brooks movie with better cinematography. It’s totally absurd. What is the point of a story set in ancient times that doesn’t even try to actually capture ancient times?

First, I don’t know who this JD fellow is, so I’m completely ignoring him and whatever issues you guys may have to work out.

I’ll state my overall conclusion, and then unpack it below: some of your claims about the Church Fathers are false, and actually ignore more disturbing points on which they were unanimous.

Having studied this topic fairly thoroughly (I’m finishing writing a book on aspects of it now), I can tell you the Fathers were in fact unanimous on two topics related to the Jews near the end times:

1. They will receive Antichrist as a False Messiah (many say they will actively assist him in persecuting the Church).

2. They will convert to the Catholic Faith at the end when they receive Christ as their True Messiah.

These have been traditional Catholic belief for millennia. “Christian Zionism” is not required.

If anything, with the impending acceptance of Antichrist—who, to have a plausible claim of being “Messiah,” would, in the Jewish view, very likely be involved with or supportive of an earthly “national restoration”—a robust but loving caution would be a prudent minimum.

The issue stems less from this post, and more a previous one in which you wrote the following about the Church Fathers: “the belief that God would fulfill his promises to Israel and restore them as a nation and a people of God once the ‘fullness of the Gentiles was brought in’ was widespread among the early Church Fathers.” You then listed most of the names you quoted below.

Before getting to those quotes, there is an issue with your statement: you said “restore them as a nation and a people of God.”

The first part, national restoration, was NOT widespread among the Fathers; indeed, it’s very rare, and mostly speculation by some (such as St. Bede, for example, who you don’t cite).

Given your views, it is reasonable to think by “national restoration” you mean something like the State of Israel, since in the same post you ascribe the “re-emerging” of “Christian Zionism” as a “re-emerging” of beliefs from the Church Fathers after a supposed 1,000 years of the “state church hiding it [the Bible] from them” (a myth to address another time). None of the quotes you provided speak to a “national restoration” in the Christian Zionist sense. More on that below.

The second part, that they will be restored as “a people of God” is more true, but I think it’s more accurate to say the Church Fathers believed they would be restored TO the people of God, which they all believed was the Catholic Church in which Jew and Gentile exist on equal terms through Jesus the Messiah.

Let’s now proceed to the quotes you provided below. Sourcing wasn’t provided, but I’ll assume they are accurate for the time being:

—Tertullian + Origen: yes, standard expectation the Jews will convert to Christ (note: neither of them are Church Fathers, though they are important ancient witnesses).

—St. Jerome + St. Augustine + St. Prosper + Cassiodorus: again, standard expectation of Jewish conversion (note: Cassiodorus is also not a Church Father, but an important ancient witness).

—St. Cyril of Alexandria: the first and third quotes are, again, very standard stuff about Jewish conversion at the end. The second quote, which perhaps you think applies to the State of Israel or some other latter days “national restoration,” is actually from his Commentary on Obadiah 1:20-21, and is talking about the Jews returning to Judah from Babylon. You can find this in the “Fathers of the Church” set published by the Catholic University of America, Vol. 116, pg. 144.

So the one quote that comes closest to your actual point doesn’t make your point. St. Cyril affirms the traditional teaching on the Jews and Antichrist elsewhere (see his Commentary on John, Book 3, Ch. 2, 5:43).

This week, my wife and I made the very difficult decision to terminate the pregnancy due to Trisomy 21.

The choice was not made lightly. We really appreciate all of the personal stories that you guys shared with us, especially the unconditional support we received from fans with no matter what we decided.

I know some of you may be very disappointed to hear this news. We are devastated. This has been extremely traumatic for both of us, especially Ashley.

She underwent the procedure earlier this week and is on the mend. Thankfully, everything went smoothly, but emotionally we are drained.

Trisomy 21, also known as Down Syndrome, is caused by an extra chromosome. It is caused by an error in cell division, like a glitch. The odds of a baby having it is 1 in 1000.

When I first confronted this news, I was shocked but optimistic. If they’re a little slow intellectually, then we’ll make it work. I signed on to be a parent, come what may…but I just didn’t fully understand what Down Syndrome entailed.

Once we made it public, it became clear that MOST people don’t know what Down Syndrome entails (and no, it’s not the same as Autism):

50% of babies with DS have heart defects. 75% will have hearing challenges. Over 50% will have vision problems. Impaired immune function, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, delayed physical development, poor muscle tone, structural issues with face, decreased lifespan, etc…Sadly, the list is long, feel free to look it up…Down Syndome isn’t a “blessing”, it is objectively shitty from a health perspective.

I didn’t realize just how rough it is for the child, let alone the family…more often than not, they would be fully dependent on others for the rest of their life.

The miscarriage risk is also close to 50%, which made matters worse…they may never see the light of day and it puts Ashley further at risk.

We spoke with doctors, friends, family and genetic counselors and learned that up to 90% of women terminate their pregnancy after learning the baby has Trisomy 21.

This was WAY higher than I expected, I thought it would be lower given that I hear so many say they kept or would keep the baby. I believe that’s because most terminations happen privately, it feels shameful. A lot of judgment being cast.

You never think you’d be in this type of situation until it happens to you and then things change.

To all of my fans who have weighed in on this topic who have Autism, Down Syndrome or any other conditions…we appreciate you. You matter a lot and we’re glad you’re here. I commend you and your families for having the strength and courage to push forward.

As for us, we made a difficult decision that we believe in the long-run will be beneficial for our family. Thankfully, we had a choice.

It will take a little time to move on, but we are excited to try again in the future and hopefully have a better outcome.
