Cancer patients are coddled like the helpless infants they often become, met with sympathetic gazes, gifts, helpful inclusiveness. Addicts are disdained, ridiculed and rejected by society as a whole. Most assume addiction is a choice. Addiction is no more a choice than is cancer.
