When your dream has no job description.
This morning, my house help was leafing through my book The Hundred-Year-Old Baby when she looked up and asked, βAuntie, how many books have you written?" I paused.
"Twenty-five⦠or maybe twenty-six. I've honestly lost count." She laughed.
"Eeeeh! Your parents' school fees did not go to waste!"I smiled.
To her, the number of books I'd written was proof that my education had paid off. But her question reminded me of something I've experienced throughout my career.
For many people in Uganda and across much of Africa, writing has never been seen as a profession.
When I first chose this path, people couldn't understand it. "You mean you didn't want to become a doctor? An engineer? An accountant?" "Why would anyone choose to write books?"
I don't blame them. Most of us were raised to pursue careers that were familiar, respected, and financially secure. Writing sounded uncertain. It looked more like a hobby than a profession.
I remember visiting a corporate office years ago to market my books. After my presentation, one lady smiled and said, "You're better than those who sell themselves. Wamma, let me support you." She meant it as a compliment. But it also revealed something deeper. People simply didn't know where to place an author.
Today, things are changing. More African writers are telling our stories, preserving our history, shaping conversations, and building businesses around their work.
Slowly, we're beginning to appreciate that writing isn't just a passion; it's a profession with the power to educate, influence, and create opportunities.
Every career that is respected today was once misunderstood. Perhaps it's time we stopped asking young people why they chose unconventional paths, and started asking how we can support them in succeeding.
What unconventional career have you seen people underestimate, only to later realise its value? I'd love to hear your story.
A Childhood Memory : Why I Sing About Jackfruit
One of my strongest childhood memories is about feneβjackfruit.
People often wonder why I sing about jackfruit. To many, it is just a fruit. To me, it is a symbol of home, community, and some of my earliest memories growing up.
I remember the excitement of seeing a ripe jackfruit hanging from a tree, the sweet aroma filling the air long before it was opened, and the joy of gathering around with family and friends to share it. It was never a fruit that was enjoyed alone. It brought people together.
Beyond its delicious taste and nutritional value, jackfruit carries a deeper meaning in our culture. One explanation of its local name traces it to the phrase βffenna ensiβ, meaning βthe whole worldβ or βeveryone together.β Whether folklore or linguistic history, the idea behind it is beautiful: a fruit so abundant that an entire community can gather and enjoy it.
That spirit reflects something I value deeply about Uganda. We are a people who share. We welcome. We gather. We tell stories. We eat together. We celebrate together.
Perhaps that is why jackfruit continues to appear in my music and storytelling. It reminds me of where I come from. It reminds me that some of lifeβs richest experiences are the simplest onesβa fruit shared under a tree, laughter among friends, and a sense of belonging.
When I sing about jackfruit, I am not only singing about a fruit.
I am singing about childhood.
I am singing about community.
I am singing about Uganda.

Lukwago denied bail as expected. @mkainerugaba had said "Lukwago will be in prison for 10 years." I had no doubt in my mind that the Magistrate was waiting for the ruling to append her signature. That is why she kept on postponing the ruling from Monday morning to 2pm to within next 24 hours. The whole plot is to deny Besigye lawyers who are forceful to enable Emmanuel Baguma convict @kizzabesigye1 as quickly as Muhoozi wishes. @EriasLukwago in jail and @MarthaKarua deported.
I hope the country remembers that @KagutaMuseveni wanted the Constitution amended to stop court from granting bail. This time, even the NRM MPs refused. He vowed to find other ways. Through cadre judges and magistrates, Museveni has found the other ways. Guys our country has gone; finished!
Our first stop today is St. Maryβs Hospital Lacor.
This facility is a blessing to the people of Gulu, its neighborhoods and neighboring countries like South Sudan.
Can you imagine a normal delivery here costs 7000 Ugx while the most mothers pay for a c-section is 50,000 Ugx.
Another very organized institution.

Can the Media Centre also serve as a central hub for advertising government job opportunities? For example, vacancies across various ministries, government departments, and agencies could be posted in one place.
Where can a graduate currently go to find all available government openings? It would be beneficial to first centralize government job advertisements so that citizens can easily access and track opportunities from a single platform.
Before joining Rotary/Rotaract, it is important to consider your willingness to serve others, the time you can commit to meetings and community projects, and the financial obligations such as membership dues and event contributions.
You should also evaluate whether the club's culture, values, and activities align with your personal and professional goals. Rotary offers excellent opportunities for leadership development, networking, fellowship, and community impact, so joining should be driven by a genuine desire to make a difference while growing both personally and professionally.
Ultimately, the best Rotary/Rotaract experience comes from actively participating and embracing the spirit of "Service Above Self." π€π

Namugongo: Africa's Largest Martyrs' Shrine and Uganda's Premier Faith-Based Tourism Destination
Today, on Martyrs' Day, we honor the enduring legacy of the 45 Uganda Martyrs β men of profound conviction who, between 1885 and 1887, laid down their lives at Namugongo for their faith.
From a tourism perspective, the Namugongo Martyrs Shrine attracts over half a million pilgrims and international visitors annually. The shrines stand as a powerful case study in the potential of religious and heritage tourism across the continent.
