My father died in Japan in February and I could not get back.

I told exactly one American, and only because he asked a direct question at a bad moment and I have never been able to lie fast enough.

He did not say he was sorry.

He said, "You busy Saturday?"

I was not busy Saturday. I have not been busy on a Saturday since I arrived in this country.

He wanted help moving a riding mower to the other side of his garage. The mower runs. He drove it out himself. I want to be accurate here, because I have thought about it a great deal since: the mower ended that day about two feet from where it started.

We were in the garage five hours.

There was a small refrigerator out there with beer in it and one orange drink belonging to his grandson, and neither of us touched the orange drink at any point.

We discussed a shelf. We discussed a bolt for some time. Around one o'clock we spent close to forty minutes on the correct way to coil a hose, and he was wrong, and I told him he was wrong, and he told me to prove it, and I proved it, and he said "huh," and that was the end of it.

He did not mention my father once.

I had prepared for it. In my country a man in mourning is approached with fixed phrases that have been in service four hundred years, which is the entire purpose of them, and I had built mine in English over three nights. They were not good. They were ready.

I never used them. I still have them written down.

At six he said, "Same time next week?"

We did that for five Saturdays. We moved a workbench. We rewired a light that already worked. One Saturday we sorted screws by length, which is not a job. That is somewhere to put a man.

In April a neighbor three doors down lost his mother.

I do not own a mower. I own a boat trailer that does not need to be moved.

He came at eight. He is coming again this Saturday.

I have not said one word to him about his mother and I am not going to.

He knows what time.

A SpaceX recruiter once described what happens when Elon Musk personally interviews a candidate. And it explains why SpaceX has the lowest acceptance rate of any company in aerospace, lower than NASA, lower than Boeing, lower than any defense contractor on earth.

She said the interview doesn't feel like an interview. There's no behavioral questions. No "tell me about a time when." No competency framework. Elon sits across from the candidate and starts asking technical questions at the boundary of the candidate's expertise. Then he pushes past the boundary.

He's not testing whether you know the answer. He's testing what happens when you don't. Does the candidate panic and make something up? Do they freeze? Or do they say "I don't know but here's how I would figure it out" and then reason through it in real time?

She said the candidates who get hired are almost never the ones with the most impressive resumes. They're the ones who reached the edge of their knowledge and kept thinking out loud instead of shutting down. The willingness to sit in not knowingn and work through it publicly is the signal Elon selects for.

She said he rejected a PhD from MIT and hired a self-taught engineer from a state school in the same week. The PhD froze at the edge of his knowledge. The self taught engineer said "I've never solved that specific problem but here's how I'd approach it" and then spent ten minutes reasoning through it while Elon listened.

SpaceX doesn't hire credentials. It hires problem solvers. And the only way to identify a real problem solver is to push them past what they know and watch what happens in the space between knowledge and uncertainty. That space is where rockets get built.

HERO: On April 22, 2018, James Shaw Jr. walked into a Waffle House in Antioch, Tennessee, expecting nothing more than breakfast. Minutes later, gunfire erupted inside the restaurant.

Four people had already been killed, and the gunman was still holding an AR-15-style rifle. Most people ran. Shaw made a split-second decision.

Unarmed, he charged the shooter, grabbed the rifle by its burning-hot barrel with his bare hands, and fought until he wrested the weapon away. His hands were severely burned, but he did not let go. The gunman fled. Shaw’s actions almost certainly prevented further loss of life.

The country called him a hero. Shaw refused the title. He said he was simply trying to survive and protect the people around him. Instead of seeking attention, he launched a fundraiser that raised more than $200,000 for the victims’ families. He continued speaking about healing and supporting communities affected by violence.

The headlines have long since faded. Many no longer remember the name. But courage like James Shaw Jr.’s should never be forgotten.
