Funerals often involved discerning whose sorcery was "responsible" for the death. Once identified, an avenging party would target the "murderer" or, in some cases, the first person encountered in the indicated direction

This practice perpetuated a cycle of violence, as the relatives of those killed in retribution would then seek their own revenge
