His Beatitude Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa, addressing Christians in Bethlehem today says “the light of Bethlehem is the Light of the World”, adding that “I saw in Gaza disaster there, the situation is really catastrophic, but I saw there also the desire for life”:

“Dear friends, brothers and sisters, Merry Christmas!

Today I see in Bethlehem is real Christmas! And today you are giving not just to Bethlehem, or the Holy Land, but to the whole world, what is the meaning of Christmas; I’m sure we are not out of all the problems, but today in Bethlehem I see light. Not just the sun, but you the people, I see the light, you are light, we all together are the light, because you decided to be the light. And the light of Bethlehem is the Light of the World.

I bring to you the greetings, the prayers, and hugs, of our brothers and sisters in Gaza. I saw in Gaza disaster there, the situation is really catastrophic, but I saw there also the desire for life. In the midst of nothing they have been able to celebrate with joy despite everything, and they remind us that it is always possible to rebuild even in all the devastation we are seeing. So it is possible once again to celebrate in Gaza, it is possible to celebrate in Bethlehem, we need to celebrate not just today but everyday. We will rebuild everything, but we build within life and today I saw life. Merry Christmas!”

His Beatitude Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa at Christmas Midnight Mass in Bethlehem: “To celebrate Christmas in Bethlehem is to recognize that God has chosen a real land marked by wounds and expectations. The holiness of the places coexists with wounds that are still open. We come from years of great hardship, in which war, violence, hunger and destruction have deeply marked the lives of so many, especially the little ones. The situation has become too heavy, relationships too conflicting. Starting over and rebuilding has become too hard. In these years, history has shown all its contradictions, reality has come to us with its heavy, complicated and sad side. However, what is concrete and painful evidence for us is also felt elsewhere in the world. There is a widespread desire to escape from reality. People flee from responsibilities that are too heavy, flee from caring for the common good in order to retreat into their own private interests, flee from ties that are too demanding, in order to move from one distraction to another, in a climate of general disengagement. A little bit everywhere, one senses great unease, sometimes even spiritual, unable as we are to understand all this violence, and the culture that feeds it or ignores it.”

السبت 20 كانون الأوّل 2025، قام غبطة البطريرك الكاردينال بييرباتيستا بيتسابالا والمطران وليم شوملي بزيارةٍ تفقديّة شملت عددًا من المراكز الطبيّة والإغاثيّة في قطاع غزّة، تضمّنت زيارة مكتب الكاريتاس في غزّة، والعيادة الطبية التابعة لاتحاد الكنائس، ومحطّة المساعدات التي تديرها الإغاثة الكاثوليكيّة في حيّ الزيتون، ومركز توما بالإضافة إلى مستشفى المعمداني، وجامعة الأزهر، وجولة إلى خيام النازحين على شاطئ بحر مدينة غزة، مطلّعًا على أوضاع الخدمات الإنسانيّة والصحيّة المقدَّمة للسكان والنازحين.

On Saturday, December 20, 2025, His Beatitude Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and Msgr. William Shomali visited several medical and humanitarian centers in the Gaza Strip, including the Caritas Gaza office, a medical clinic of the Union of Churches, and a Catholic Relief Services aid point in Al-Zaytoun, and Tuma's Center. They also toured Al-Ahli (Baptist) Hospital, Al-Azhar University, and the tents of displaced families along the Gaza City seafront, where they were briefed on the humanitarian and health situation.
