Based and Big (sequencers): The L2 Endgame
Congrats, you basically attended my panel today.
For those who want longer form thoughts, here is why I think that's the outcome of the L2 landscape.
Two reasons:
🔹Users want access to Ethereum's rich history in a composable manner without paying out the ears
🔹Users are tired of bridging, and in equal parts application teams are tired of managing duplicated infra across 73 chains to gain ~nothing
On Based (L1 Composablity)
I think the first point resolves to Based Appchains launched from providers like @gwyneth_taiko and @Spire_Labs, where users can finally feel like they're interacting with Ethereum and all the wondrous culture existing there but with faster response times (preconfs) and without the crazy fees.
@mteamisloading will kill me if I say more "aligned" so I'll simply say the setup is more synergistic with Ethereum mainnet, if not monetarily then by way of being composable.
On Big (Sequencers)
This will be the other end of the spectrum.
Opinionated designs that have no plans to have their stack duplicated across 823 other chains.
One chain. One home. Many (composable) apps. All using $ETH.
This is why I'm making a bet on @megaeth.
I think we're seeing such strong demand for the simplicity of that outcome that teams are willing to give up some revenue and sovereignty.
No one wants to be the next Degen chain where they started as an app, felt they had to take on the infra side and ultimately got fucked by the RaaS provider (p.s. use @gelatonetwork)
Not your (rollup) keys, not your chain.
Users, too, are okay giving up some properties to enable smoother and potentially net-new onchain experiences.
To lend credence to this thesis, I'll be watching the user and app reception of our recent Brothers in Throughout @EclipseFND who are off to a stellar launch.
The benefit of rollup centric roadmap is that we can strive for this large environments and hit levels well beyond that of consensus-bearing protocols and still preserve some of Ethereum's properties (like the ability to exit to L1 permissionlessly).
In the case of MegaETH, we'll be so finely tuned to having to be an L2 atop Ethereum that we literally cannot leave to become an L1 without destroying 90% of our chain performance value prop and 100% of our social credit.
Wrapping-up
A lot of this is path dependent and no one knows the outcome. Especially me.
The likely answer is everything on the design spectrum sees it's time in the sun, and most will persist for as long as we're here, but I think as the pie grows we'll see that some things have simply been over-indexed for.
One thing is for sure: we're going to run the experiment.

We're all running our own race and comparison is truly the thief of joy - just enjoy the ride instead of coping over things that have no relevance on your life
All of these clients use wrappers around the same C lib.
If you want to get even more alarmed, the lib has some handwritten assembly to squeeze out that extra bit of performance.

Did you know that all clients share a key piece of code for signature verification?
Bitcoin-core, Geth, Nethermind, Besu, Erigon, and Reth use exactly the same lib!
Imagine a bug in there. End of crypto as we know it.
