"For this quiet, unprepossessing, passive man who has no garden in front of his subsidised flat, books are like flowers. He loves to line them up on the shelf in multicoloured rows: he watches over each of them with an old-fashioned gardener's delight, holds them like fragile objects in his thin, bloodless hands."
Zweig, "The Post-Office Girl"
I have a special fondness for people who are a little different. You know, the black sheep, the odd ducks, the ones that don't quite fit in. Often seen as outcasts or eccentrics who tend to be loners or feel lost and forgotten, these people have a unique charm that I find deeply appealing. There is something truly beautiful about them and I believe they have the most beautiful souls.
People who do not conform to societal norms often have rich inner lives. Their experiences and perspectives are shaped by a journey that is far from ordinary. They may have faced more challenges, felt more deeply, and thought more critically about the world around them. This often leads to a depth of character and capacity for empathy that is both rare and precious.
These unique personalities teach us to see the world in new and wonderful ways. They remind us that there is beauty in diversity and that the conventional path is not the only path. Their courage to be themselves despite the pressure to conform is inspiring. It takes a lot of strength to embrace your true self in a world that often tries to put everyone into neat, predictable boxes.
In addition, so-called "odd ducks" often possess incredible creativity and innovation. Their different way of thinking can lead to new ideas and solutions that those who stick strictly to the status quo would never consider. This creative spark is something we should cherish and encourage as it drives progress and enriches our culture.
Spending time with these people can also be a very rewarding experience. Their authenticity and honesty can be refreshing in a world where superficial interactions are all too common. They often have a unique sense of humor and perspective that makes conversations with them fascinating and enlightening.
In a society that often values conformity, it is important to remember the value of those who march to the beat of their own drum. By embracing and appreciating these people, we open ourselves up to a world of new experiences, ideas and understandings. They show us that beauty often lies in the unexpected and the unconventional, and that diversity in thought and being is something to be celebrated, not shunned.
"To enjoy life, we might have to stop thinking about what we will never be able to read and watch and say and do, and start to think of how to enjoy the world within our boundaries. To live on a human scale. To focus on the few things we can do, rather than the millions of things we can't. To not crave parallel lives. To find a smaller mathematics. To be a proud and singular one. An indivisible prime."
