I had a good friend in high school who caught the surfing bug real bad. He was valedictorian of the hs class and he ended up getting close to a full ride to Princeton where he would begin an electrical engineering degree. He was one of the smartest guys I knew, and clean cut too. Few months into the first semester he dropped out, bought a van, went out east to Montauk and lived out of the van doing farmer co-ops with granola bars he made in an oven overnight using just the pilot light. Saw him about a year later and he had dreds to his mid back and was living his best life. I don’t know if there’s a message here, but I often wonder the kinds of things he would have accomplished had he stuck with the Princeton EE route. There was nonetheless an inner peace to him that I think about to this day. I also think there’s something about surfing can oneshot people, for good reason though.
