The issue with textbooks is the practice of monetizing and instructionalizing things meant to be mental math strategies. It forces strategies intended to develop gradually & naturally into procedures. This reduces thinking, increases mimicking, and decreases understanding.
@Wipebook@pgliljedahl@NMedina5 thanks! So excited about this book and all of the amazing ideas. I plan to implement the penguin method - smile and wave - instead of answering questions. Love learning from other BTC teachers in the trenches!

Place value is a recipe for a number. The digits tell you the ingredients - 42 is 4 tens, 2 ones. 398 is 3 hundreds, 9 tens, 8 ones. Like all recipes you can make substitutions (3 tens, 12 ones) but the way the digits are written show the tens and ones, etc. needed.
Do you have to practice times tables? Try our beautiful new multiplication flash cards developed with @MathforLove! They are completely free, and just need a few minutes of practice per day. https://t.co/YDzrvz5FTc
Happy Friday! Want Google Slides of @openmiddle problems to use virtually? I made 4th, 5th and now 6th grade sets. Make a copy.

@pwharris 250 always makes me think of a quarter (25 cents) so 4X250 is 1000 (because 4X25 is 100) and I can do that three times to reach 3000 (so that would be 12X250 because 4X3 is 12). Then 3X250 is 750 (like 3 quarters), so 250X15 is 3750. I also could have used 10s and 5s to solve.
@pwharris Preaching from the math pulpit - "The algorithms for addition, subtraction, and multiplication are not particularly helpful in building mathematical reasoning, but the long division algorithm is actually hurtful." AMEN
@pwharris Thank you for showing me a way to access 2(pi)/3. All I needed was an entry point. Never assume you CANNOT do something. Never assume our students CANNOT do something. Look for an entry point. Make math accessible by creating opportunities for sense-making.
Unless we learn to start from where children are, and resist our urges to rescue them in times of confusion, out role is restricted to telling rather than teaching. - Ed Labinowicz, "Children's Right to be Wrong," 1987
The Multiplication Course is getting closer and closer to being finished. I'm now about 6 days away from having it completely ready to go.
This is my view in YouTube as I'm working through the videos near the end of the course.

A teacher believes that math is not figure-out-able when they are using a mnemonic to help kinds memorize something - rote memorize something - then they are treating that math as FAKE math, not as REAL math @pwharris
@pwharris Would you rather have students solve 7 times 8 using a counting strategy, additive thinking, or multiplicative reasoning? What if speed wasn't the main goal? What kind of thinking are they using? We need to build multiplicative thinking to reach proportional reasoning.
For me, using mental math & not having to follow all of the MATH RULES I was taught is like seeing OZ. That great & powerful man was just pulling bells & strings behind a curtain. There was no real magic. Dorothy had the power THE WHOLE TIME and just needed to see it for herself.
