Count on from 8 to get 15 and you have 15. Make the ten (8+2, then +5) and you have something that still works at 28+7.

Three-cueing had the same flaw. "Pony" for "horse" scored as comprehension, so it couldn't separate decoding from guessing.

In narrow math there is one path, so struggle reads to a kid as being lost.
Widen the math and the same struggle reads as searching, because more than one thing is worth trying.
@pwharris The flip also changes what counts as a finished answer.
"Which one doesn't belong" ends the moment someone picks one.
"What do the other three share?" makes you name the property out loud. And a named property is something the rest of the class can go test.

A 10-frame quietly teaches two things at once: "ten" and "full". They line up perfectly, so they're easy to fuse.
Her 12-box version pulls them apart. At six, she's found the assumption the tool was carrying.
