Totally agree. You can literally teach students how to solve quadratics by completing the square by saying nothing and just listing a sequence of problems.
@pwharris@Steelemathlete Absolutely! We teach multiplying with a box (so students see that direct relationship), but I agree this provides a conceptual connection that dates all the way back to the area models that students first use to represent multiplication.
I was just reminded by @Steelemathlete about how great polynomial division is with a box! s/o to @pwharris for sharing this with us via the GREAT book "Advanced Algebra Problem Strings!"

@KentHaines Similar theorem for work ethic:
Let "n" be the number of hours I work.
Anyone who works n+1 hours is a workaholic.
Anyone who works n-1 hours is lazy.

Really cool interactive cross sections applet from the video can be found here: https://t.co/ZwDTylKXNQ
@cluzniak@debatemathpod I'm concerned that grades are the only "carrot" for students that aren't intrinsically motivated. How do we motivate the unmotivated without the grade? My experience is that removing the grades doesn't change this (optional practice has like 5% completion rate)
@KentHaines I came across this applet a few years ago. I think it is pretty user friendly. I usually have us all walk through it together (so I can demonstrate which sliders to use and whatnot) https://t.co/ZwDTylKXNQ
Steele Early College High School student Nathan Collins will head to the Texas Capitol and U.S. Capitol this summer! Thanks to the Youth Leadership Tour program from CoServ, Nathan will represent Northwest ISD and learn more about how both the state and federal government work.
Found a PERFECT Trigonometry problem while reading Project Hail Mary by @andyweirauthor
I can't decide if I should have students just draw a picture and solve, or if I should see if they can find what is incorrect about the problem.. #mathed#mathchat

Great conversation this morning about correlation vs causation. # of firefighters present at a fire is correlated with the amount of damage done... what can we conclude from that?
Now, to figure out why gymnasts appear to be shrinking over time....#mathchat
