The Church of the Holy Apostles was Constantinople’s second greatest church after Hagia Sophia and the imperial burial church of the Byzantine emperors. Its five domed, Greek-cross design became the direct architectural model for St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice.

After the Ottoman conquest, it was demolished to make way for Mehmed II’s Fatih Mosque. According to the historian Kritoboulos, turkish dervishes spent 14 hours smashing the inside of the church, its imperial tombs and their remains with clubs and iron bars, before throwing the fragments into a lime furnace.
