—So what is American Stories: A Concert Film? It’s me and my incredible American Stories band playing songs for you live at the legendary Sound City Studio A: some new songs, some old songs —everything live, with no click tracks or backing tracks. It was directed by Antony Muse and shot by Russell Tandy. Very excited for you to experience it— also — our tour starts next week!

“Forgive is to Know” started with four chords that I wrote on a rubber bridge guitar leant to me by Ethan Gruska. The first lyrics that came were for the chorus, and they quote Alexander Pope, who wrote, in 1711, “To err is human, to forgive, divine.”
•
From there, I went on a journey writing verses. I probably spent a couple years writing the verses of this song and I wrote more than could fit in one song… and I did something that I rarely do which was to write about songwriting itself in those opening couplets.
•
Still my favorite line came to me as I was in the midst of recording vocals: “…that the institutions don’t reward the compassionate.”
American Stories was originally an eight song album. “To Feel No Way” was a song I’d started but didn’t know how to finish. Ultimately it’s one of two songs I finished writing with my friend Tobias Jesso Jr. I’m so happy we could come together on those two songs.
