🇵🇸 San José State University must reinstate Sang Hea Kil, a tenured professor in its Justice Studies Department, with full back pay after an arbitrator ruled her firing over pro-Palestinian activism was “excessive and disproportionate,” cutting the penalty to a one-month suspension.

Kil, a former adviser to Students for Justice in Palestine, was the first tenured faculty member fired from a public US university over pro-Palestinian protests, per the AAUP. SJSU cited her role in three campus actions in 2024: a February protest that shut down a guest lecture, a May rally, and a May Gaza solidarity encampment.

A faculty panel found firing was not warranted, but SJSU’s president overrode the guidance. “We won, and it’s a victory for academic freedom and pro-Palestine speech,” Kil said.
