If you’re new around here, my daughter Payton was born with a rare Chromosome Disorder that required her to need a trach at five weeks old.
If you’re unfamiliar, a trach bypasses the vocal cords and therefore means that we haven’t gotten to hear her since that surgery. Thankfully, the invention of the Passy Muir valve exists and so we can get momentary glimpses of her voice and laugh, but it’s never sustained for long periods of time.
Last night, I got to hear my daughter truly laugh for the first time…and it wrecked me.
I’m posting this vulnerable video here to let you in on the side of raising a medically-complex child that doesn’t get seen much. The mixture of grief, joy, and beauty that all hits you in one moment and sends you reeling.
The thought that I had that truly made me start weeping was that her laugh is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard.
A laugh that I’ve waited so long to hear. A laugh that makes you want to laugh in response. A sound that we didn’t think we’d ever get to hear when we were told when we were pregnant that she might not make it to birth.
I can’t wait until the next time that I get to hear it.
