The people of Den Staat have lived there for generations. But they have to jump through hoops to appease their ancestors. The famous golden rhino of Mapungubwe is important. The king was buried with the totems of the people he ruled: information often left out. #6WC

Sebelebele uses the Deep Hang Out method (Clifford Geertz, 1994). It includes participatory observations, walk-longs, rights workshops, and archival research. She focuses on dignity taking from this community. Wildlife can move through Den Staat but herding is frowned upon. #6WC

PLAAS Associate Researcher Maud Sebelebele's work focuses on the first Mother City, Mapungubwe. One of the communities she works with is based on Den Staat farm, which is sandwiched between land managed by the Mapungubwe National Park. #6WC
