🌍 Rory Stewart bonus episode out tomorrow | 28 October
My friend @RoryStewartUK has been a bit of a rewilding sceptic for some time, especially as it relates to the uplands where farming is a real struggle. My name has come up several times in connection with rewilding on The Rest is Politics.

Today I spoke at the opening of “Ireland–Belarus: National Cultural Identities” in Dublin 🇮🇪. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, together with the United Transitional Cabinet of Belarus and my Office, organised the conference as part of Ireland’s Presidency of the Council of the 🇪🇺.
It brings together around 200 politicians, writers, linguists and cultural figures from Belarus and Ireland to discuss language, national identity, cultural independence and the role of theatre in understanding our histories.
Despite Russification, censorship and repression, Belarusians continue to preserve our identity. The cultural awakening of 2020 continues through the work of our cultural figures, both at home and in exile.
Preserving our national identity also means protecting our future. The so-called “Russian world” is built on the idea that Belarus and Ukraine are merely extensions of Russia. But we are not Russia.
Lukashenka’s regime pursues Russification in Belarus, just as Russia does in the occupied territories of Ukraine, trying to turn us into Russians.
First they tell you that your language does not matter. Then your history. Finally, your country.
This is why supporting culture, protecting our languages and strengthening our national identities are so important for Belarusians and Ukrainians alike.
Defending our culture and identity means defending our freedom.
Residents in Kherson took advantage of the ceasefire to return to their long-burnt apartments in most heavily bombed by Russia neighborhoods and retrieve what was left of their belongings.
Russia's "human safari" in the region is raging on for years. Just look at what they have done to this city!

Great news about Starlink speeds. It should not have taken this long to get it restored — how many Ukrainians died because they couldn’t properly intercept drones?
No country today can guarantee its own security on its own. This is the task of existing and future alliances. Especially when it comes to Eastern and Central Europe – countries of the former "socialist camp" which the Kremlin regime, for some reason, still considers its sphere of influence.
We discussed this with the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to the United Kingdom, @VaclavBartuska . Particular attention was paid to strengthening bilateral Ukrainian-Czech relations.
Having served for many years as the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security, Václav Bartuška has visited Ukraine on numerous occasions, so he has a good understanding of the challenges Ukraine currently faces ahead of winter. He also understands the risks Russia poses to the energy security of European countries.
I am grateful to the Czech Republic for consistent support for Ukraine and Ukrainians.
This Bartlett interview with President Zelenskyy was incredible. Highly recommend watching it start to finish.
This is what all those with a platform should do - amplify the truth about russia's war and Ukraine's heroism under russia's monstrously barbaric siege.
The Russians tortured 500 people in Bucha.
The Russians tortured children in Bucha.
The Russians tortured dogs in Bucha.
The Russians killed animals in Bucha.
In Bucha, the Russians used military vehicles to hunt people—turning it into a game.
People ran, the Russians fired, they hunted them down, playing games.
And this didn’t just happen in Bucha.
Trump and his mafia gang call this "humanitarian."
What do you call it?
I have read dozens of outraged posts because the US special envoy Witkoff called Putin a "humanist." But no one is writing about the fact that the American negotiators are simply not doing their job. Let me explain.
Peace negotiations are important in their own right. Even if they do not lead to a lasting peace, the process itself is an opportunity to resolve urgent humanitarian issues. If, of course, the human dimension is a priority for the negotiators. But it is entirely obvious that neither Witkoff nor Kushner cares about people's fates in this war.
The Pope calls on Putin to save thousands of people from starvation in occupied Oleshky and the surrounding villages. The UN speaks about a humanitarian catastrophe and asks Russia to allow the evacuation of the civilian population. European Parliament Vice-President Pina Picierno goes on a hunger strike to draw attention to this tragedy unfolding before the eyes of the whole world.
And what are Witkoff and Kushner doing?
That's right, almost nothing.
Except for passing along greetings from Putin’s aide to the First Lady.
Thousands of people are already eating grass to survive and begging to save their lives. The Ukrainian side raises the issue of Oleshky at every meeting. And I can name dozens of such urgent humanitarian issues off the top of my head where American negotiators must be proactive.
Trump’s peace negotiations have already gone down in history as the deadliest years for Ukraine’s civilian population since the start of the full-scale invasion.
I don’t know if anyone will remember the names of Witkoff and Kushner.
But history will certainly record how American negotiators, who had the opportunity to save a huge number of people, refused to raise uncomfortable questions before "humanist Putin."
A horrific Russian strike in the Kharkiv region. A “shahed” struck people directly – in a park near an ordinary café. Pure atrocity. Six people were killed, including children. A little girl was killed in a stroller – her name was Angelina, she was just over a year old, born in August 2025… Her mother’s name was Inna. She died in the hospital… Another girl who was killed was 11 years old. My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 14 people were injured, including six more children.
I am grateful to everyone who supports Ukraine under these circumstances and helps us shoot down “shaheds,” shoot down missiles, and stop Russian assaults. These are horrific photos, but behind them are shattered lives and the truth about this war. Lives must be protected. Ukraine needs air defense. You can't think about making money with Russia as long as it continues its asinine war. We ask that sanctions on Russia stay in place as long as the killings continue. We ask America to be strong, and we ask it to apply the Lindsey Graham law. We ask Europe to continue its support. We ask that everything possible be done to bring peace and guarantee security. Ukraine wants peace. It is Russia that has insisted on continuing the killing all this time. The world has enough strength to stop the war. That strength must finally be used – against the murderers.
