I have a dear friend who has fallen right off her pedestal. I used to admire her as, I thought, an independent thinker. But these days she repeats the talking points of her political party with no scrutiny whatsoever. She's totally woke, and pretty low-information on this issue.
I did have a long talk with her once about my concerns -- rapists in women's prisons, etc. -- the painful human fallout of policies that promote a self-declared identity over an indisputable physical category. I thought she understood the logic of it. A year later I saw a post from her about the right's "fear of gender ideology," which she presented as fear of gay and non-gender-conforming people (!)
I was freaked out, and very depressed for several days, thinking about it. She had not absorbed anything I said -- and I don't mean from the point of view of agreeing with it, I just mean from the point of view of *knowing what it was.* It was like the monoculture of the NY Times and the Guardian and nonstop Bluesky had wiped it all away. Maybe she'd willingly erased it from her mind because she didn't want to believe I was a Nazi bigot.
She is not at all a bad person, but I know we can never be so close again. I've had to face the loss. And I'm sad at not being able to respect her intellect as I once did. She's off with "Two plus two equals six, twelve, who can say, 426 maybe, numbers are floating in the ether..."
@SNeurotypicals I was the swot at school who won all the prizes because school was my thing, who now struggles in a low paid basic admin job. I’m so embarrassed I avoid friends, who actually achieved things, and because my house is a a shit-tip. And I’m angry because no one asks what happened.
@mightbeautistic Yes, then as an adult worked for a reference publisher editing them😁. Living the dream. I remember a dictionaries department night out where some random asked us what we all worked at. He was horrified. Then insulted us all by suggesting it was like editing the phone directory.
@yvanspijk @ArrantPedantry The only one listed as obsolete in English, the word for armpit, lives on I think in Scotland as oxter, a common dialect word.
@MizLiot@gaelic67 As someone who moved the vast distance from Aberdeen to the Broch as a 10 yr old, this resonates. Bit of a language barrier let’s say, on various levels. Kids at school decided as I didn’t spik Broch I must be English. This was intended as the ultimate insult.
@MarindaOnline I have 3 times taken on ‘rescue jobs’ after the original CE did a really poor job. Always wondered what the heck happened😲. Currently working with an author who my editor has warned me is anxious after a bad experience😢.
@gabiReith Love it. Sorry, not a suggestion but taken with galshiks which is a new one on me, although up in the Broch they said gulsh, which is similar. My granda in Aberdeen called sweet stuff smachary and I’ve never heard anyone else use it.
The Glasgow Garden Festival happened 30 years ago. There’s a display of special collection memorabilia at the Mitchell Library until Thursday this week. I visited to gather memories for today’s @BBCRSAfternoons Show with @JaniceForsyth (from 42 min) https://t.co/PTFmQorlTE
Amazing weekend of music. First @obanfiddle and @KitDownes and today @AdmiralFallow with the kids(!) courtesy of @MMMusicClub at @SWG3glasgow. Taking kids to proper gigs, brilliant idea. Doesn't get much better than this.
