Kasparov: After defeat, Russia faces a choice — become China's vassal or start negotiating with everyone. Recognize crimes, pay reparations, build equal relationships with all neighbors.
Stop being a permanent incubator for dictators. There is no third option for Russia. 3X
A russian soldier called “Grom” raped Alisa Kovalenko for four days.
Before that, they beat her. They threatened to cut off her fingers and her teeth. They promised they would get to her parents, and to her boyfriend.
She was 27 – a documentary filmmaker who had come to Donetsk Oblast to film the beginning of Russia’s war.
A taxi driver turned her in.
Her partner, the French producer Stéphane Siohan, raised the alarm in the media. The public attention saved her. She was released. She carried what happened alone for more than a year before she could say it out loud – and then became one of the first women in Ukraine to say it anyway.
Russia expected that to break her.
In 2022, when they came back for the rest of the country, Kovalenko first got the heroes of her unfinished film to safety. Then she volunteered for the front – a mother of a small son, serving as an assault infantry soldier.
She put it as simply as it can be put:
“When you see even one form of Russian evil, you understand that it must be stopped at any cost.”
They wanted a victim. They got a soldier.

One billionaire family controls the bridge that carries 25% of all U.S.–Canada trade.
The good news? There's a brand new public bridge right next door (and Canada paid for the whole thing).
The bad news? Donald Trump won't let it open.
Here's the story:
For more than a decade, Michigan and Canada worked together to build a new public crossing right next to it — six lanes over the Detroit River, named for a Canadian-born Red Wings legend, built by thousands of union workers. Canada paid the entire bill. Michigan co-owns it. It's finished. It’s a shining example of international cooperation and collaboration, with a tremendous return for both sides: more jobs, faster trade, and lower costs.
So why isn't it open?
Because the Moroun family, who own the rival Ambassador Bridge just up the river, doesn’t want the competition. They spent years and tens of millions of dollars trying to stop any competing international crossing from being built or opening. They lost. So they went to the White House instead.
In January, Matthew Moroun gave $1 million to a pro-Trump super PAC. Then the billionaire called Trump's Commerce Secretary and, just hours later, Trump suddenly attacked the same publicly owned bridge he praised in his own first term and threatened to block it.
Then, the day before the June 12th ribbon-cutting, the opening was called off indefinitely.
It's corruption so flagrant it would be laughable if it weren't so damaging.
Trump is screwing over Michiganders for the interests of billionaires — holding a finished, publicly owned project hostage to protect one donor's toll booth.
So a finished bridge sits closed, Michiganders keep paying the higher tolls, cars and trucks cost more, and a billionaire family keeps its monopoly.
Mr. President: stop playing games. Open the damn bridge.
There’s no doubt that Putin fears the return of his army home. That is why he is so afraid of the war ending without victory. And there will be no victory. He is physically afraid of his own army. That is why, if there is no ceasefire backed by specific security guarantees, he will return to war. And this time, others may be the ones under attack.
Today, Ukraine is de facto the second army of NATO – one that is not inferior to the second army in the world. And that is why NATO needs us – specifically us – de jure. This is already a fact recognized by all leaders. Putin will remain in the Kremlin until his death, and he has one goal: the restoration of the Soviet Union. Without Ukraine, this is impossible, and that is why things are so difficult for us.

A small public service announcement from the Department of Things That You Should Know…
It has not “peeked” your interest.
Nor has it “peaked” your interest.
…It has piqued your interest.
You are not “phased” by something.
You are fazed by it.
If you’ve had a long day, you are weary.
If you suspect someone is an idiot, you are wary.
It is “due course”, not “do course”.
“Per se”, not “per say”.
And while we’re here, it’s “could have”, not “could of”, but that particular battle may already be lost.
Thank you for your attention during this brief outbreak of grammatical housekeeping.

Kaja Kallas: As Russia bombs cathedrals, Europe should not roll out the red carpet for Russian artists and athletes that support the Kremlin's war. Culture and sport should not be a tool to whitewash aggression.
После окончания войны все операторы российских дронов и командиры ракетных расчетов, совершавшие военные преступления против мирного населения Украины, должны предстать перед Международным трибуналом.

Russians have struck the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra and are burning down one of Ukraine's oldest Orthodox churches‼️
The roof of the Dormition Cathedral is ablaze. The cathedral itself is a significant part of our history, it is older than Moscow. It was already there when russian neanderthals were building shacks made of sticks and shit.
Fucking barbarians!
Right now, as Russians continue to strike #Kyiv with over a dozen of ballistic missiles, the Dormition Cathedral of Kyiv‑Pechersk Lavra — a UNESCO World Heritage site and priceless cultural landmark — has been struck and is burning.
A brutal assault on our people and our heritage. This is the true face of Russia’s Orthodox values.

🧐🤔YOU WANTED A WALL, TRUMP? YOU’LL HAVE ONE.
Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, responded to Trump’s threats:
“So you voted to build a wall.
Well then, dear Americans — even if geography isn’t your strong suit, and you see America as a country rather than a continent — you should know that on the other side of that wall stand 7 billion people.
And if the word ‘people’ doesn’t resonate with you, let’s call them ‘consumers.’
Those 7 billion consumers can switch from iPhone to Samsung or Huawei in less than two days.
They can trade Levi’s for Zara or Massimo Dutti, and within six months replace Ford and Chevrolet with Toyota, KIA, Mazda, Honda, Hyundai, Volvo, Subaru, Renault, or BMW — brands that are already more popular in many places.
They can cancel DirecTV.
And even if they choose not to, they can stop watching Hollywood films and turn instead to higher-quality productions from Latin America or Europe — with richer storytelling and better filmmaking.
Believe it or not, people can skip Disney and visit the Xcaret resort in Cancún instead — or explore destinations across Mexico, Canada, or South America.
Even in Mexico, you can find better burgers than McDonald’s — with higher nutritional value.
Have you ever seen pyramids in the United States?
Egypt, Mexico, Peru, Guatemala, and Sudan have ancient wonders — none of them in the U.S.
If they were, Trump would probably have bought and resold them by now.
We know Nike isn’t the only sneaker brand. There’s Adidas — and even Mexican brands like Panama.
We understand economics better than you think.
And we also know that when those 7 billion consumers stop buying American products, unemployment will rise, and your economy — trapped behind its own self-imposed wall — will begin to collapse to the point where you’ll be begging for help.
We didn’t want to do this.
But you wanted a wall?
Well.
You’ve got one.”
Her approval rating has reached a historic level — according to a recent poll, it stands at 85%.

Ireland is being made to shrink its dairy herd, with healthy in-calf cows going to slaughter early, to satisfy a nitrogen figure set in Brussels.
Start with how cruel the timing is. Barely a decade ago, when the EU scrapped its milk quotas in 2015, Ireland told its farmers to do the opposite. Expand. Grow the herd. Build the new parlour. The government's own strategy pushed dairy hard for export growth, and thousands of families borrowed heavily and did exactly as they were asked. Now the same establishment that cheered them bigger is ordering them smaller.
The instrument is a rule that sounds technical and harmless. The EU caps the nitrogen that livestock manure may spread on the land. Ireland's grass-fed dairy farms, among the most efficient and lowest-carbon on earth, held a hard-won allowance to graze a little heavier. After a water-quality review, that allowance was cut, from 250 kilos of nitrogen a hectare down to 220, across great swathes of the country from 2024, and it has stayed under threat ever since, its conditions tightening at every review.
To drop under the new line, a farmer has three doors. Find more land, ship his slurry away, or get rid of cows. Land is scarce and the squeeze itself sent rents soaring, so for many the only door left is the herd.
The Irish Farmers Association reckoned an extra sixty nine thousand acres would be needed nationally just to stand still. One senator, a farmer himself, warned that up to forty one thousand cows, a great many of them pregnant, could be sent to slaughter to comply, and called it an animal welfare catastrophe in the making.
Sit with that. Healthy, productive, in-calf cows, on some of the greenest grass in Europe, culled early because a stocking number on a form moved by thirty kilos. The very cows the nation was begging the farmer to buy ten years ago.
This is what modern environmental policy looks like at the sharp end. A good cow loaded onto a lorry she never needed to be on, on a wet Tuesday in County Cork, to shift a figure in a spreadsheet.
REP. BACON: President Trump wants to negotiate settlement between Ukraine and Russia, acting like referee in boxing match, but that’s not the case. There’s good versus evil here.
Russia invading Ukraine, bombing cities every night. America should be unashamedly on the right side — the side of democracy, the side of Ukraine, country that wants to align with us.
Russia hates us. Putin hates United States, hates what we stand for. I don’t know why President Trump can’t see that.
I’ve waited year and a half in this Congress to get something done on Ukraine, and we’ve done nothing.
There have been no votes, no policies from the leadership here or from President to support a country that is fighting for its life.
I agree that Ukraine has the upper hand right now, but Russia is bombing those cities every night, and we should be there to help them defend against these ballistic missile attacks.
Actions speak louder than words.
