🚨EXTREME HEAT WATCH IN NYC🚨
Wednesday through at least Saturday, heat indices will surpass 100 degrees, potentially reaching 109 on Friday.
These are extremely dangerous conditions, and New Yorkers must plan now to stay safe and help their neighbors do the same.
The best way to prepare for extreme heat is to identify a safe, air-conditioned place you can spend the hot days.
If you don't have air-conditioning at home, plan to stay with family and friends or visit a free, public cooling center. Beginning Wednesday, the City will activate hundreds of free locations across the city.
Find one nearest you, including accessible and pet-friendly options, by visiting https://t.co/Iqa7gXBq7R or by calling 311.
Once you have your heat plan, check in on your neighbors — especially seniors, outdoor workers, and people with chronic health illnesses — to make sure they have one too.
Under the City's Heat Emergency Plan, the City has been planning since last week for what may be a historic heat wave. We will continue to share heat safety guidance and emergency updates throughout the week.

As temperatures rise after days of extreme cold and snow, serious safety risks remain across New York City.
Melting snow and ice can fall from buildings and structures without warning. Property owners and construction sites are required to remove hazardous ice and snow. Report unsafe conditions to 311. Call 911 for emergencies.
Salty meltwater can damage underground electrical equipment and, in rare cases, trigger manhole fires or other hazardous conditions. If you see smoke, sparks, or an open manhole, move away immediately and call 911.
Wet streets and sidewalks can refreeze overnight, especially on bridges and shaded blocks. Dangerous ice and new potholes are likely. Walk and drive with extreme caution.
Ice on lakes, ponds, rivers, and tidal areas is unstable after temperature swings. Salt water ice is often thinner and weaker than freshwater ice. Never assume ice is safe. Avoid icy areas near bridges, docks, and moving water. Closely supervise children at all times.
If someone falls through the ice, call 911 immediately. Do not attempt a rescue without proper equipment. Many rescuers become victims themselves.
At home, check vents and flues for blockages. Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working. Use proper footwear outdoors and check on older neighbors and those who may need assistance.

Dangerously low temperatures return to New York City this weekend.
When temps drop outside, the heat should be on inside.
If you have little or no heat and/or no hot water in your apartment, visit https://t.co/hbhM6jaIrH.
This weekend presents a moderate to high excessive cold threat to life and property.
Wind chills near or below 0°F can cause frostbite in minutes. Severe frostbite can lead to permanent nerve damage, loss of feeling, skin and tissue death, and infection. Limit time outdoors and take frequent breaks indoors.
Dress in loose, warm layers. Cover your face, hands, ears, and feet. Avoid wet clothing. Check on older adults, people with medical needs, and neighbors. Bring pets inside.
Keep space heaters away from anything flammable, plug them directly into the socket and never use extension cords, and never use ovens or grills to heat your home. Let faucets drip and open cabinet doors to prevent frozen pipes.
Call your landlord for heat or hot water issues and contact 311 if they are not resolved.
If you need heat, warming centers are open to everyone. Find locations at https://t.co/pJZpBzR8bT.

After days and days of working on BOTH snow operations and collection, we ARE catching up on trash and compost pickup. And we ARE collecting paper and metal/glass/plastic recycling, too, FAR FASTER than in previous storms.
It’s a 24/7 operation – working on both collection and snow removal - running hundreds of collection trucks on every shift, 12 hours at a time, until we are fully caught up.
Thousands of people are working to get this done as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your ongoing patience as we work to do it all.
