Fate/Grand Order: Zettai Majuu Sensen Babylonia - Initium Iter
Director - Toshifumi Akai

UD - Takahiro Harada & Noriko Takao
Babylonia is next on the roster, and this time we have a studio change with CloverWorks taking over production. It is an interesting shift considering the First Order material came from a different production team, but honestly, I welcome the change. There is already a noticeable sense that this is being treated as the beginning of something much larger.
This episode is primarily focused on Mash’s backstory and how she ended up being sent into the same world established during the First Order storyline, eventually leading into her meeting the Main Character while he was sleeping on the floor. Seeing those pieces finally connect makes the whole setup feel much more coherent. What initially seemed like disconnected events start fitting together like puzzle pieces, and I appreciated how naturally the episode bridges that gap.
From a sakuga perspective, the standout material comes during the action cuts. Some of the animation here is genuinely quite splendid, particularly in how the characters are moved through the action rather than simply relying on effects to sell the impact. I noticed Toya Oshima was credited as the Action Director, and that involvement definitely makes sense when looking at some of the more energetic sequences. The choreography has a much stronger sense of physicality compared to the quieter portions of the episode, with the cuts carrying a noticeable amount of weight and momentum.
The episode is also slightly longer than usual, coming in at around 26 minutes, which gives the backstory enough room to breathe without feeling excessively rushed. That said, I would still describe this as an alright episode rather than something spectacular from beginning to end. Its biggest strength is clearly its role as a setup piece.
Because of that, this feels less like the main attraction and more like the final stepping stone toward the actual Babylonia storyline. The pieces are being put into place, Mash's circumstances are becoming clearer, and the production is starting to tease what CloverWorks is capable of when the action really gets going.
Personally, I came away satisfied, but more importantly, I am now considerably more excited to see the actual mainline series kick into gear. I have heard plenty about the incredible staff lineup attached to this season, so if this episode is merely the appetizer, I am very curious to see what happens once the production really gets to show off.
