Resident Doctors are incredibly undervalued
Their request for pay restoration is a bargain!
I try to fix it before national booking opens up on Dec 15th to no avail - no number to call, no one responding to @PearsonVUE emails until after 15th when obviously the location I’m close to (London Southwark) is completely full. (2)
I commented at the time of the Coroner's report into the tragic death of a Pamela Marking (presenting with undifferentiated abdominal pain & vomiting, due to an obstructed femoral hernia, but misdiagnosed with "epistaxis" by a PA) that PAs should not be seeing undifferentiated abdominal pain. Abdominal pain is difficult and needs expert assessment by a doctor.
But this response by @pa_StephenNash is beyond disgraceful. Accusing the medically qualified Coroner of "printing 'anaesthetics united' rhetoric" is distasteful, disrespectful to Pamela Marking and her family, extremely unprofessional, and brings the reputation of the entire NHS into disrepute. Mr. Nash should be sacked and/or resign immediately IMHO.
In one graph from @guardian is the relative drop in earnings of public sector workers. Not surprising that @TheBMA members say the DDRB ‘award’ is inadequate. Claps don’t pay the bills, childcare for 24/7 on-calls, housing & massive student loan costs - cash does.
Following the disappointing pay announcement from Government today @Melissa_S_Ryan and @RossNieuwoudt have written to @wesstreeting.
Resident doctors have been clear and consistent with their demands for #PayRestoration, our door remains open to negotiate that path.
@DoctorsVoteUK@NHSBartsHealth This is vile? Who is this targeting? Are they trying to capture IMGs who need NHS experience for much lower wages? Shouldn’t that be illegal?
With a 40 hour week this works out at £12.26 an hour. Doctors undergo six years of med school and some have 100k of debt.
@NHSBartsHealth wants doctors to make life or death decisions for close to minimum wage.
Does this seem right to you?
Patients in London are being left shortchanged.
Over 32,000 shifts have gone unfilled in London hospitals, leaving the doctors left behind overworked and short staffed.
The reason why these doctors are having to do the work of multiple medics is because London trusts are colluding to keep rates for pay for extra shifts universally low across all hospitals. This is bad for patients and for doctors.
Doctors taking on extra work on top of already long hours should be paid fairly. Patients deserve to have a well staffed rota of doctors, not chronic staff shortages.
There is a silent medical scandal ongoing in the UK.
A staggering 20,000 NHS doctors will be potentially out of a speciality training job this August. This means doctors can’t train to be consultants or GPs, despite the rising waiting lists.
The UK has spent time and public money on the education of UK medial graduates, yet 1000s of them are unable to find a speciality training job. This is a colossal waste of money and an example of diabolical workforce planning.
The training spaces are being centrally restricted by the government, yet @wesstreeting refuses to act. Why?
Yesterday the Leng review came to Derriford (Plymouth) to hear all sides of the issue surrounding PAs in the NHS. Derriford is well known for employing a high number of PAs and so it makes sense for them to visit. The review is meant to be unbiased and fair.
Dear UK public,
Yesterday, hot on the heels of widespread concern among doctors at the govt’s project of replacing NHS doctors with doctor substitutes, @gmcuk released a blog about its future intentions.
It left doctors like me reeling.
Here's why 🧵

Claudia hits the nail on the head here.
Introduction of PAs and GMC regulation is to:
1) blur lines between professionals (doctors and non-doctors)
2) this is completely driven by corporate greed (profit margins are higher with a less skilled workforce and reducing regulations/standards)
1/ NEW & IMPORTANT: So we need to talk about NHS pay. NEW shocking [post DDRB] data just in 4/1/24 👇 (SPOILER: Not "fair & reasonable")
We need to fix pay/retention to fix waiting lists- increasingly clear next GE will won/lost on NHS
Please read whole 🧵 & share widely/RT
How is this acceptable @BucksHealthcare?
Doctors are NOT worth half a Physician Associate.
FY1s, this is how they value you. Look how they value your replacements.
STRIKE.
🚨THIS IS TODAY - National March for Palestine - Stop the War on Gaza! 🇵🇸
When: Saturday 21 October, 12PM
Where: Marble Arch, London
150,000 joined us when we marched for Palestine last Saturday. We need even more of you on the streets today to demand an end to the war on Gaza
@SuellaBraverman The UK public will not fall for your lies. The narrative you’re trying to sell is false and we all know it. Those of us who attended the protest saw people of every race, religion and walks of life walking in solidarity against the brutal occupation of Palestinians.
The Home Secretary is treading on dangerous ground here.
A peaceful demonstration is being slurred as "an intimidating mob" and a chant heard at the rally is being mischaracterised.
This is not okay. Thread.
