Today, Mario Bartel sat down with our President of Hockey Operations and General Manager, Tali Campbell, to discuss the importance of local news and the recently launched 'Save Our Local News' campaign — an initiative started by Mario and several other local journalists.
This is what Tali had to say about why local journalism matters and what the Tri-City News has meant to the Express and our community:
Having strong local news coverage is vital to the health of our community. Local journalism truly is the heartbeat of a community — informing residents about issues that directly impact their daily lives, celebrating local achievements, and shining a light on stories that might otherwise go untold.
In a world where national and global headlines often dominate, local news remains essential for fostering civic engagement, holding local leaders accountable, and strengthening the sense of pride and connection within our neighborhoods.
For us, it’s not just about sharing final scores or game recaps, it’s about the stories behind the scenes. It's about a local athlete who plays for the Express and goes on to make his NHL debut, or the heartfelt human stories that transcend the sport. These are the moments that matter most, and only local journalism can truly capture and share them.
I cannot overstate how important local news is, not just for sports, but for the spirit and identity of our community.
The feel good story everybody needs today…
Bowie was abandoned as a pet on the streets of Thailand. She was scarily thin and also pregnant.
Today her life came full circle and she got the most incredible bit of news… (1/10)
It's been 25 years since local IndyCar racer Greg Moore was killed doing the sport he loved and was so good at. I had the privilege of covering the first time he climbed into an IndyCar, on assignment for @MapleRidgeNews https://t.co/L0o0pgE5zM
