Worried you'll have to tear off all your old stucco? In my experience, not always. On a job we have going now, new paper and lath overlap the existing, then the scratch coat goes on. Brown coat and base with mesh come next.

Hoping to patch one bad spot in your smooth stucco?

I wouldn't recommend it. In my experience a smooth patch dries differently, and you can see where it was. With smooth we go edge to edge, top to bottom, so the whole wall is done at once.

Wondering where stucco problems start? In my experience, wherever there's moisture.

Check where the dirt meets your stucco. If soil is piled against it, that bottom edge can stay wet and a metal weep screed there can rust. Keep that edge clear.

Found stucco cracks and thinking about caulk and paint?

Caulk can seal a crack, but if you care how the wall looks, it can show through the paint. With a lot of cracks, if the look matters, in my experience it's usually a re-stucco, edge to edge.

Doing a re-stucco on just part of the house and worried about a seam?

Agree on the stopping points before work starts. We talk it through first and plan to end at a natural break, like a gutter or a corner, because a line can still show where new meets old.

Damaged or cracked stucco doesn't always mean tearing it all off.

On one fire-damaged project with older cracked stucco, we washed it, opened the cracks, chipped off loose stucco, then went over it with base, mesh and a new finish. Ask whether that's an option.

Your stucco crew puts on a coat, then no one comes back for a week? That can be on purpose.

The brown coat on this wall is the coat that gets it straight. Now it cures for 7 days, then cementitious adhesive with fiberglass mesh goes over it.

Getting bids for smooth stucco? Ask how many guys they'll put on it.

Smooth can't dry before it's finished, or you'll see burn marks. A whole house can take 7 to 10 guys, sometimes 13, working each section together.
