In 2023, an astronaut on the ISS self-administered an EEG headset in microgravity — no technician, 400km above Earth. The device was Smarting PRO.
Mission: Axiom Mission 2, Nebula program. Astronaut Ali Alqarni trained before launch, then mounted the system alone during flight.
Before launch, Smarting PRO passed NASA preflight certification — including battery destructive testing — to confirm it could handle microgravity.
Research question: does spaceflight change brain activity? EEG showed decreases in DMN alpha power during flight. Full recovery post-return.

Maybe children's changes develop more gradually. Maybe self-report just doesn't capture it well in younger participants.
2/ 24 parent-child pairs. Digital mindfulness program, practiced together.
Before and after: hyperscanning EEG on both simultaneously.
Both showed reduced alpha-band activity in the default mode network — less mind-wandering, more present.
4/ The finding: high performance was maintained.
The cognitive cost behind it was not.
Behavioral metrics alone would have missed it entirely.
This is why EEG matters in high-stakes environments
3/ High vs. low cognitive demand conditions.
Surgical performance? No measurable difference.
Subjective distraction? Significantly higher in high demand.
ERP components (N1, P2)? Neural adaptation — the brain quietly compensating the entire time.
2/ Researchers used mobile EEG during a laparoscopic surgery simulation.
22 participants. Real OR soundscape — ventilators, alarms, instruments. Memory task running in parallel throughout the entire procedure.
