Funny how the loudest “Canada is broken” voices keep coming from the provinces with the worst premiers running the show.

Here’s the part people skip: your daily life is run by your province, not Ottawa. Healthcare, schools, hospitals, highways, policing, housing approvals, electricity rates. All provincial jurisdiction. The premier you voted for controls almost everything that actually touches your day to day.

Alberta’s economy gets mismanaged by Smith, healthcare gets gutted, and somehow it’s Ottawa’s fault. Saskatchewan posts some of the worst outcomes on healthcare wait times and education funding in the country, then blames “the Laurentian elite.”

These are the same people who vote for cuts, then complain when the cuts hurt. Vote for underfunded hospitals, then post about ER wait times like it’s a national betrayal. Vote against federal transfers and equalization fixes, then act shocked when their own province can’t deliver services.

If your premier controls your hospital wait time, your kid’s classroom size, and your power bill, and all three are getting worse, that’s not a “Canada is broken” problem. That’s a “you elected this” problem.

The data is right there. Most of the “Canada is failing” energy isn’t coming from a place of national decline. It’s coming from provincial governance failures, dressed up as a federal crisis.

It doesn’t surprise me that people continue to attack the Obamas, especially Michelle. Not only because she is poised, classy, and intelligent. Not only because she has clear vision and can communicate it eloquently.

But because she represents something that has historically made many people uncomfortable: a powerful, educated, unapologetic Black woman.

Michelle Obama has spent decades carrying herself with grace under a level of scrutiny most people could never imagine. Yet her accomplishments, character, and service are routinely met with attacks rooted in racism, misogyny, and stereotypes that have long been used to diminish Black women. Stereotypes that portray Black women as angry, aggressive, less feminine, less intelligent, or somehow undeserving of the spaces they occupy.

She shattered those narratives simply by existing in one of the most visible positions in the world.

She also became a symbol of what is possible. Today, Black women continue to lead in educational attainment, earning college and advanced degrees at remarkable rates despite facing systemic barriers that were never designed with their success in mind. Michelle Obama stood on a global stage and showed an entire generation of Black girls and women that their intelligence, education, and voices belong in every room they enter.

The criticism has never really been about who she is. It has always been about what she represents.

Because when a Black woman embodies excellence, confidence, intellect, and influence, it forces people to confront biases they would rather ignore. And for some, racism is easier than reckoning with the truth.

The attacks say far more about the people making them than they ever will about Michelle Obama.
