Dylan Larkin Deserves Respect in Detroit ❤️
Tonight, Dylan Larkin will step onto the ice at home wearing the Detroit Red Wings sweater again.
And regardless of everything surrounding his future, we hope the reaction he hears is one of respect.
Because one trade request should never erase everything Dylan Larkin has given to Detroit.
This is a kid from Michigan who grew up understanding exactly what the Winged Wheel meant. He became a Red Wing, developed into one of the NHL’s premier two-way players, was trusted with the “C”, and carried the responsibility that comes with being captain of one of hockey’s most historic franchises.
There have been great nights. There have been difficult seasons. There have been injuries, pressure, expectations and plenty of moments when Larkin was asked to carry an enormous amount on his shoulders.
And he kept showing up.
That’s why hearing him booed doesn’t sit right with us.
Fans are allowed to be disappointed. They’re allowed to disagree with his decision. They’re allowed to wish things had gone differently.
But Dylan Larkin isn’t suddenly a bad person because he reached a point in his career where he felt he needed a change.
Behind No. 71 is a human being.
A teammate. A leader. A son of Michigan. Someone who has represented the Red Wings and the city of Detroit with tremendous pride for years.
And let’s not forget the hockey player.
The speed. The competitiveness. The ability to play in every situation. The willingness to battle through pain. The leadership. The nights when Detroit needed something to happen and Larkin was the guy trying to make it happen.
Whatever happens next cannot erase what came before it.
So when Dylan Larkin steps onto the ice tonight, we hope Detroit remembers the entire story not simply the latest chapter.
You don’t have to agree with someone’s decision to appreciate everything they’ve given you.
Dylan, keep your head high.
Whatever sweater you wear in the future, nobody can take away what you’ve accomplished, the people you’ve impacted or the years you’ve poured your heart into the Detroit Red Wings.
Tonight, No. 71 deserves respect. Dylan Larkin

i am a huge believer in "pro athletes are people doing their best" but truly, do not believe that media availability was dylan doing his best. in this essay i will --
idk man, i think we can have some negative feelings toward the player when he sat in front of the media and said "the fans deserve answers that's why i'm here" and then refuse to give answers. like it wasn't just about the trade request
"But why won't star players sign in traditional hockey markets?!?!"
Dedicate 12 years to a franchise that hasn't been relevant at all and he gets booed for wanting a chance to win?
Blame ownership. Blame management. Don't blame the player.
i just don't think it's fair for people to expect dylan larkin to get off scot free. watch that press conference and tell me that fans deserved any of that from our captain who in april swore he was committed to seeing this through
