The very first Robotic Whipple was performed at Wellstar MCG earlier this year. Congratulations to Dr Yakoub, Dr Colquhoun, Dr Milgrom, and their surgical oncology team who carried this patient through the carefully coordinated finish line.
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Andrew Lawson as Division Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery and Clinical Service Chief of the Adult Trauma Service, effective August 1, 2025.
Dr. Lawson brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to advancing trauma care. He completed his surgical residency at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in 2017, followed by a Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship at Emory University at Grady Memorial Hospital, and a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship at UT-Houston. Since rejoining MCG as faculty in 2019, he has distinguished himself as a clinical leader, educator, and innovator.
Currently, Dr. Lawson serves as Director of Surgical Critical Care at Wellstar MCG, where he oversees both the Surgical Trauma Intensive Care Unit (STICU) and the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). As Program Director of the Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, he has led significant improvements in the fellowship's curriculum, call structure, and overall training experience. His service on numerous departmental, institutional, and national committees reflects his deep dedication to both clinical excellence and academic leadership. In his new role, Dr. Lawson plans to expand the Emergency General Surgery (EGS) service and ultimately obtain certification for the EGS service from the American College of Surgeons.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Terence OโKeeffe for his outstanding leadership as Chief of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery since 2019. His contributions have been instrumental in shaping the programโs success and growth.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Lawson on this well-earned appointment.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Colonel Manuel Fernando "Manny" "Papo" Ramirez, MD, retired, a cherished father, husband, and dedicated physician, who peacefully passed away in his sleep on Sunday, March 9, 2025.
Manuel was a man of remarkable dedication, serving both his country and community with honor. As a vascular and general surgeon, he made a lasting impact on countless lives with his expertise and compassionate care.
Dr. Ramirez graduated from University of Puerto Rico in 1976 and finished his general surgery training at Walter Reed in 1981. He then completed vascular fellowship at Walter Reed in 1985. After a short time in San Antonio, he became Chief of Vascular Surgery at Dwight Eisenhower Army Medical Center in 1989. In 2014, he formerly joined our department as Clinical Professor of Surgery and greatly contributed to surgery resident education. While he retired from MCG Department of Surgery in 2021, he maintained continued leadership and participation in vascular conferences with our department until 2024. He was always a thoughtful contributor to vascular discussion and greatly augmented our training.
Manuel's legacy of kindness, strength, and compassion will forever be remembered by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate to know him.
