This video shows babies stop crawling over a glass floor, which reveals an early perception of depth and fear of heights.
The behavior was demonstrated in the famous Visual Cliff experiment, created by psychologists Eleanor Gibson and Richard Walk.
In the setup, babies were placed on a platform covered with thick glass. On one side, a patterned surface was placed directly under the glass, while on the other side the pattern was placed much lower, creating the illusion of a sudden drop. Even though the glass made the surface completely safe, many crawling infants refused to move across the “deep” side.
Instead, they stopped, reached out cautiously, or looked back toward their parents for reassurance.
The experiment showed that by the time babies begin crawling, they already have a surprisingly developed sense of depth perception. It also suggested that the hesitation around heights may be an early survival instinct, helping humans avoid dangerous drops long before they fully understand the concept of height.
