I spent some time with Sam Altman a few summers ago. After my chat, I cancelled my Chat GPT subscription and have never used it since. There was something about my conversation that just rubbed me the wrong way.
This was the summer of 23. I continue to hear of more and more partnerships that are ending with a burned bridge. I wouldn't be surprised if there is another coup at @openai but this time from within where Sam doesn't maintain an executive function there.
I was clearly wrong about Anthropic. They are obviously currently the leader in AI. No company has released a model as good as Mythos/Fable and they will undoubtedly have Mythos 2 ready soon.
And I would never cut them off in a way that hurt them badly, even as a competitor. That’s not my style.
Tesla open sourced its patents and we made the Supercharger network available to all competitors, even though we could have made it a walled garden.
SpaceX launches competing satellite systems with no increase in price or use of unfair terms.
Even my worst enemies can attack me on this platform.

Ramin Rezaeian: "We Did It ALL For Our PEOPLE"
"We are just energized for my people in Iran, because they deserve more happiness."
¿EE.UU.? ¡No sé!
John Bolton once called for Edward Snowden's execution. He even fantasized how, saying Snowden "ought to swing from a tall oak tree."
Bolton is now a convicted felon for mishandling classified information: not to inform the public but to profit off a book. Get the noose.
IT'S APPLE'S FAULT. They knee capped suppliers at the bottom (as Apple always does), so Micron couldn't invest.
WSJ: "In an interview Wednesday night, Micron Chief Business Officer Sumit Sadana said the company couldn’t make investments during the memory market’s last downturn, when Micron’s gross profits went negative, in part because certain customers took advantage to pay rock-bottom prices.
“We told a couple of the customers who were being very aggressive with pricing at that time that this is not constructive,” he said, without naming Apple, adding that low prices discouraged capital investments. “A lot of the industry investments got shut down in 2023 because of really poor pricing and really poor margins.”
If you are asking “Why push back against anti-datacenter efforts?” I consider it a tragedy that anti-nuclear efforts largely strangled nuclear power in the US based on vibes, and I don’t want to see that happen to AI. Public opinion matters, and it shouldn’t be ceded unchallenged.
If you are asking “Why should I support AI efforts at all?” I believe we are in the midst of a transition more vibrant than the industrial revolution. Opinions formed a couple of years ago about the uselessness of AI are no longer valid. Millions of people and organizations are getting great returns from using it, and the demand for data centers is the market responding to the value signal. That is how progress is made!
Here is what we know: U.S. taxpayer money, funneled through USAID and NIH, funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. That research likely caused the COVID pandemic that killed millions and cost trillions.
Dr. Fauci personally signed off on these experiments, then lied to Congress about it. Biden tried to protect him with a last-minute pardon. That’s the very definition of a cover-up.
For years, I raised alarms about dangerous gain-of-function research being farmed out to foreign countries, and I was told it was a conspiracy theory. Now, declassified documents show that the U.S. funded over 120 biolabs across more than 30 countries. Some of this research was conducted overseas precisely because scientists knew it would face scrutiny on American soil.
I'm calling for a presidential commission of scientists to review all gain-of-function research going forward. We're going lab by lab and pathogen by pathogen until the American people know the full truth.

The US is not paying Iran anything under this deal, and the people who keep saying this like @ChrisMurphyCT -- or, worse, who are saying that the US is paying Iran $300 billion, like @amyklobuchar -- are outright lying.
The money that flows to Iran's is Iran's money: that the US froze and refused to give back but will now release under the deal. The $300b is the maximum Iran can get. That's not from the US or from Americans, but from a private fund financed by the Persian Gulf dictatorships and their oligarchs.
These are just Democrats trying to prove to AIPAC and the pro-Israel lobby that they're more hawkish on Iran than Trump/Vance.
The ceasefire agreement with Iran with the opening of the Strait of Hormuz is welcome news. Democrats should support it. I am glad it includes a provision for mutual respect of the US & Iran's sovereignty so we do not launch a dumb war of choice again.
The war was a costly lesson for the US. As expected, Trump failed to bring about regime change. The terms seem no better than what Obama secured under the JCPOA nearly a decade ago. America lost 14 precious service members and wasted billions of dollars on this foolish endeavor.
But today, we can be relieved that gas and food costs will start coming down for Americans. And that no more American or civilian lives will be lost.
It also shows that when the Congress votes to end war --as we did last week -- it can be a wake up call for the President to listen to the anti-war sentiments of the American people.
California is one of the most dynamic places on the planet.
But it is a case study in how a rich society can spend more and more while producing less and less of what its ordinary citizens need.
My take:
💥NEW: CNN’s Fareed Zakaria *DELIVERS BRUTAL TAKEDOWN* of California’s “FAILING MODEL OF GOVERNANCE”💥
“The frustration is real and JUSTIFIED… it is a case study in how a rich society can spend more and more — while producing less and less of what its ordinary citizens need.”
