5 June is #WorldEnvironmentDay 💚🌿🌳
We celebrate and commemorate the courageous efforts of #EnvironmentalHumanRghtsDefenders in making sure that everyone can access their right to a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment.
Land, indigenous, community-based, and environmental defenders are among the most targeted groups of human rights defenders in Asia.
For simply protecting both people and planet, they face enormous reprisals. This should stop. Defending the environment is not a crime.
#Afghanistan: @fidh_en joins 76 Afghan human rights organizations in urging the European Union and its member states to refrain from engaging with #Taliban representatives at political or diplomatic levels under current conditions https://t.co/LkBQvvjI5W
Protesters Shamin and Mushaffau remanded for an additional 15 days in prison by the Criminal Court.
Judge Ali Adam didn't want to listen fully to what defense lawyers tried to say; instead, he ordered exactly as the police requested.
It wasn't established why they needed to be detained, whether they were a threat to public peace or might flee.

For the first time in the Maldives' democratic history journalists have been sentenced to jail.
They should be immediately and unconditionally released.
Our statement below:
Two Maldivian journalists sentenced to prison a day after the Criminal Court issued a gag order on the entire population in relation to a documentary film highlighting allegations of sexual misconduct involving President Muizzu and one of his aides at the President’s Office.
Nazim is a human rights defender who has tirelessly supported and assisted the democracy movement for decades.
He’s been receiving violent threats for several years. Yameen Rasheed’s murder is proof of the consequence of police negligence.
I wish Nazim a full recovery.
The cowardly and disgusting attempt on Nazim Sattar’s life last night is the result of increased lawlessness and paralysis of the law enforcement authorities.
I call on the @PoliceMv to find and conduct an impartial investigation of the perpetrators without delay.
The government must immediately lift travel bans on senior officials of Adhadhu media group and return the unlawfully seized devices and material from them.
The criminal justice system cannot be abused to intimidate media. #worldpressfreedomday
This #MayDay, we honour the labour that sustains economies across borders where much of it is carried by women migrants.
As we head into the #IMRF2026 this month, APWLD stands with grassroots women migrants with these key demands✊

The absolute lack of rule of law destroys any efforts to strengthen independent journalism. Rather than using applicable mechanisms, the govt puts the entire nation on the defence of whatever the root of the problem is. Every single time!
Why is @AdhadhuMV being treated like a group suspected of terrorism? This cannot be lawful.
I don’t believe the video report by Adhadhu is a work of ethical journalism.
But this is far beyond disproportionate action. This is political targeting and vengeance!
The release of suspects and those involved in the murder of Yameen Rasheed, refusal to disclose the DDCOM report, refusal of the @PGO_MV to appeal decisions of the Criminal Court - these all point to complicity.
Disclose and reopen investigations!

We strongly condemn how successive governments and state institutions have handled Yameen Rasheed’s murder (today marks 9 yrs).

the government must disclose DDCOM’s findings and reopen Investigation. https://t.co/lxNlS4KCb0

Every morning, a four-year-old in Villimalé walks to school through a grove of protected trees. Last week, the path was fenced off. Three 17-storey towers are coming. Residents are divided – over what's being lost, and who it's really for.
