Ilhan Omar’s family held prominent positions within the Marxist-Leninist regime of Mohamed Siad Barre, the Somali dictator who ruled from 1969 to 1991 after seizing power in a coup. Omar’s father, Nur Omar Mohamed, was a Soviet-trained colonel in Barre’s army, serving during the 1977-1978 Ogaden War against Ethiopia and later working as a teacher trainer under the regime. Her grandfather, Abukar Omar, held a high-ranking role as director of Somalia’s National Marine Transport agency, while other relatives were civil servants and educators dependent on the government. The family enjoyed a privileged life in a secure compound in Mogadishu until the regime’s collapse in 1991 amid civil war, at which point they fled to a Kenyan refugee camp before gaining asylum in the United States in 1995. While the Omars were part of the affluent elite benefiting from Barre’s socialist system, they escaped the ensuing chaos as refugees, with no direct evidence linking them personally to the regime’s atrocities beyond their service roles.
