We think of ourselves as great tree planters, but a single group of blue jays was documented moving 133,000 acorns in one fall. They're foresters too.

Researchers in Virginia watched jays work a stand of pin oaks through one season. The birds carried off 54% of the entire crop, one to five acorns at a time, stored in the throat and bill.

They didn't drop them nearby. They flew them off and buried them one by one, pushed into soft ground and covered, often far from the parent tree. That's exactly how you'd plant an acorn if you were trying.

A jay comes back for a lot of them. Not all of them.

Every one it forgets is a tree planted somewhere a falling acorn could never reach. The acorns left under the parent oak mostly got eaten or ruined by weevils. The ones the jays moved got a chance.

Some ecologists think jays help explain how oaks spread back north so fast after the last ice age, much faster than gravity and squirrels could manage.

So leave the jays alone at the feeder. Protect the big oaks, plant native ones, and keep tree cover connected across yards and field edges.

They're doing the planting. We just have to leave them somewhere to do it.

Whey was a disposal problem.

Cheesemakers poured it down drains and fed it to pigs, until somebody dried it, put it in a tub and sold it to gym members.

Skimmed milk was a disposal problem.

It was what remained when the cream went for butter.

It went to the pigs too, until it got a red top and a health claim.

Bran was a disposal problem.

Millers bagged it as animal feed, until Kellogg's boxed it in 1916 and sold it as regularity.

Rapeseed oil was a disposal problem.

Its market was lubricating ships' engines, and that died in 1945.

Canada bred out the worst of it, renamed it canola and called it heart-healthy.

Defatted soya was a disposal problem.

It was what the oil mills had left over, until it was textured, flavoured and sold as a burger.

Beet pulp, citrus peel and oat hulls were disposal problems.

They are now listed on the pack as added fibre.

Every item on that list has been sold to you as a health food.

Every item on that list began as something a factory was paying to get rid of.

Your great-grandmother knew exactly what to do with all of it.

She fed it to the pig and ate the pig.

It made the pig fat, incidentally. Nobody thought that needed a study.

A Tennessee grandmother spent 6 months in jail after facial recognition flagged her for bank fraud in Fargo, ND, a state she’d never visited.

Angela Lipps, 50, was arrested at gunpoint in July 2025 while babysitting. West Fargo PD ran a photo from a fake military ID through Clearview AI. Her social media picture came back as a possible match. Fargo PD charged her with 8 felonies.

No bank records, travel records, or witness IDs put her in North Dakota. Her own records showed she was in Tennessee. Charges were dropped Christmas Eve 2025.

While she was jailed, Lipps says she lost -
-her rental home.
-her car (a Chrysler Sebring) and everything in it.
-her dog.
-her belongings after storage fees went unpaid.
-Social Security income, health insurance, and her doctors.

This week she sued the City of Fargo and Det. Lucas Heck for $10 million, alleging police treated an uncorroborated AI lead as identification and ignored obvious exculpatory facts.

Fargo later admitted “errors” and changed its AI policy.
