@HNTurtledove I remember reading, in Hell's Cartographers, Silverberg talking about how some of his actual academic work is still considered canonical in the field, and I was immediately struck by that as a career goal.
Oh yeah, framing this as "trying to buy your way into the cool people club" is informative. This is the billionaire's version of the guy who tries to bribe the bouncer because he didn't understand the dress code.
I think ultimately what Musk and others mean by "elite" is some kind of in-crowd populated by artists, writers, activists and other interesting people that they can't break into with money nor assert power over by being cruel.

@jeffvandermeer in retrospect, I have to wonder if the timing of this workshop affected any of the scenes in Acceptance, because there is a certain tonal similarity to the events in both.
