@RidePATCO I take Patco everyday for work, and one day a week go up to class at Temple University using the Broad Street Line. Would I be a candidate for the new Patco/SEPTA transfer freedom card, or is that only worth it if you use it everyday?
#HPM5016 As nervous as I was going in, I'm glad that this class required a legislative visit. Talking to my legislator was easier than I expected, and was a great learning experience. I look forward to doing this more in the future on other topics I care about
#HPM8008 It was great to learn in class that some states are offering Medicaid coverage to those in the foster care system up to 26 years of age. However, only 13 states now have this. More states need to adopt this policy in order to ensure equity for this population
@Joshi_tuh36090 #HPM8008 I agree, and it is a bit counter intuitive. I'd be interested in learning more about the Republican governors that decided to expand Medicaid- did they face fall out from their party after?
#HPM5016 Great campaign by teens in protest to the anti-Sex Ed protests. This is a great example of how we need to ensure the population we are serving (in this case, teens) are part of the conversation and advocacy efforts. https://t.co/RspKClCgBX
#HPM8008 As many are uninsured, Renaissance Fair workers started a foundation to cover their cost of health care. This is arguably an example of efficiency, as care is only paid for as needed, instead of workers paying into a health insurance plan https://t.co/hroOQ3voxF
@KaraDowney1#HPM5016 I enjoyed hearing from this speaker as well, & it was very innovative to get food justice & corporate leaders together to discuss bringing supermarkets back to Philadelphia. It is a great way of finding common ground and building champions in non-traditional ways.
#HPM8008 Medicare is often thought of as universal health care for seniors, but is it really? This article discusses how seniors often have to foot unexpected medical bills https://t.co/PLe15UTG5n
#HPM8008 Very interesting reading about how CHIP especially benefits children with chronic conditions and saw a decline in unmet need by 8 percentage pts. More cultural competent outreach work needs to be done so families know about this program & help close the uninsured gap
@TU_Police Thanks for the email re: recent sexual assaults. I highly encourage that future communications include language around NOT raping, instead of only focusing on how people can avoid being raped. To build a culture of enthusiastic consent we need to broaden the message
@tomhtue63070 Interesting to think how behavioral economics can factor into this. Arguably Americans expect more from healthcare- for example, we have higher use of MRIs than other countries. Perhaps this cultural expectation plays into our high cost of health & lower efficiency
#HPM5016 The Investing In Change reading is very comprehensive & can be a great tool to help both foundations & nonprofits seek grant funding for advocacy efforts. I know there is a lot of confusion around what can be funded, when, & by whom, so resources like this are helpful
@mandysmith27150#HPM5016 I agree, and would be curious to know the breakdown by topic area/sector. I wonder if advocacy burn-out is higher for more controversial topics than others
#HPM5016 This disability rights group in Texas wants to include those who are disabled due to gun violence to the forefront of the conversation for gun safety legislation https://t.co/3wpmMliOOh
#hpm5016 Chapter 11's reading notes that there is no simple predictor of policy change. Perhaps the best predictor are states, as policy can have a domino effect. Legalization of same sex marriage and the increasing # of states with recreational marijuana is a good example
@tug_jaded#HPM5016 I think the problem with public health advisories is that they aren't as targeted to communities, but rather to professionals. Advocates should make sure that messaging gets out in spaces where people frequent, such as religious settings, grocery stores, schools, etc
#HPM5016 Drexel study found that Philadelphians 40% less likely to drink sugary beverages after tax went into effect. Will be interesting to see how this impacts the city's obesity rates in the next few years https://t.co/ajX6EntHcW
#hpm8008 Interesting article about how non profit's drug for Hep C costs significantly less than big pharma alternative. Hopefully non profits such as these can help drive down costs and help medications be more accessible to vulnerable communities https://t.co/w9ctBo8hOj
#hpm8008 Arrow's 1963 paper helped me better understand the difference in economic theory as applied to health. There is a major risk for loss that cannot be guaranteed with income, as lack of food or clothing can. This signifies the need for a health care safety net for all
