Nothing, but it has always been in my mind to say it.

However, let me give you a story.

About a month ago, a married woman was in my DM.

She said that she regrets getting married.

She's from a comfortable home and her husband is from a humble home.

To her dismay, her husband bought bread and she wanted to eat it for dinner.

Her husband told her that she should not eat more than 3 slices because bread is expensive.

She felt so irritated and insulted by that.

Their marriage is just 6 months old.

She said that it was love that she followed.

End.

If you are able to feed your children properly every day, please, as much as possible, avoid sending them to spend holidays or even weekends with relatives who are struggling to provide food, just because you want them to bond with their cousins.

They'll either starve your children, or call them "spoilt" just because your children wanted two boiled or fried eggs, eight slices of bread, or more than one piece of meat.

They may even say something awful to your kids that could have a long-term damaging effect on their psyche.

Poverty is bad.

End.

Some adults know how to say, "I'm sorry you feel that way," but they find it hard to say, "I was wrong." There is a huge difference between those two statements.

"I'm sorry you feel that way" sounds like an apology, but listen closely. The problem has quietly moved from your behaviour to the other person's feelings. Instead of being sorry for what you did, you are sorry that they are sensitive.

"I was wrong" does the opposite. It picks up the weight and carries it.

Think of a crowded danfo. Someone steps hard on your toe, you cry out, and they say, "I didn't mean to." That's fine, but your toe is still swollen. Your pain doesn't disappear because their intention was good.

That is what happens in many marriages.

A husband makes a joke about his wife in front of his friends. When she says, "That hurt me," he answers, "I was only joking. You are too sensitive."

Or he finally says "sorry" and in the same breath adds, "So what else do you want me to do?" Or, "Can we just move on?" Or, "After everything I do in this house, you are still talking about that one thing?"

That is not an apology. He is just asking for the case to be closed.

Everybody is explaining their intention, and nobody is acknowledging their impact. So the argument goes on for hours, sometimes for days, sometimes for years.

In many Nigerian homes, very few parents are quick to say sorry to the child they have hurt.

My dad would take whatever my mum told him and beat you blue black. But the minute he realised the truth, he would call you and say he was sorry, then atone for his "sins" by bringing you fried chicken legs or some fruits when he was returning from work.

My mum, on the other hand, is a special breed. You won't hear "sorry" from her mouth. But she will prepare your best meal and relieve you of your chores for the day.

Many of us grew up on these different ways of receiving our parents' apologies. The chicken leg was an apology. The extra-good meal was an apology. We knew what they meant, and we forgave them.

But imagine how much more a child would hear if, along with the chicken, their parents gave them a hug and said, "I was wrong to beat you. I am sorry." A child can learn to read food as love, but they also deserve to hear the sentence said aloud.

Some children grow up decoding apologies, while others grow up never getting one. They become adults who find "I'm sorry" physically painful to say, and they wonder why their marriages feel like cold wars.

Our children need to understand that saying sorry isn't a sign of weakness.

When a child breaks a cup or hits a sibling, and you force a quick "Say sorry!" without helping them understand what they did, you teach them that sorry is a password. Say it fast, and the matter is closed.

But when you sit with them and ask, "What happened? How do you think your sister felt? What can you do to make it right?", you are building something far more valuable.

A child who learns to take responsibility for small wrongs is being prepared to become an adult who can repair relationships, be it at home, at work, in friendship or in marriage.

It is also important that you let them see you practise what you preach. When you snap at your child and later say, "I was wrong to shout at you. I'm sorry," you lose nothing.

Your child doesn't respect you less. Instead, they learn that strong people can own their mistakes, and that love doesn't collapse when someone admits fault.

Our children need to be taught that accountability is not humiliation. It is one of the skills that makes relationships survivable.

[Àgbà John Doe @jon_d_doe]

This thoughtful thread, @Okeke_Uz explores the crucial difference between performative apologies and genuine accountability.

She points out how “I’m sorry you feel that way” quietly shifts the problem from the person’s actions to the other person’s feelings; making the hurt one seem “too sensitive” instead of acknowledging the actual harm.

True ownership, she argues, sounds like “I was wrong.”

Using everyday Nigerian family examples (a husband joking about his wife in front of friends, parents who apologize with chicken or special meals rather than words, and the long-term effects on marriages and children), she shows how many of us learned to decode indirect gestures instead of hearing clear responsibility.

The piece ends with a practical call: teach children that saying sorry is not weakness, model it as parents, and help them understand impact and repair; not just treat “sorry” as a password to close the matter.

A strong, culturally grounded reflection on emotional accountability in relationships and parenting.

Some marriages seem so peaceful, yet they are unhealthy.

In some marriages, the spouses share laughter only on Sunday mornings, when they are putting up a front for the neighbours on their way to church.

Everybody at church says, "Ah, those two? They never quarrel." But they don't know that the couple has mastered the art of friction control.

I once read on X about a couple who fought over which end of the toothpaste to press. One pressed from the middle, and the other said it should be pressed from the end.

I know women who almost run mad when their husbands fling their socks, towels and wet clothes all over the room. It makes me laugh too, because I once got mad over something similar. Only, I was the one doing the flinging then.

Only those with tiny angels can understand that phase.

But the thing about these couples is that they are at least talking. Something irritates one person, they say so, and the other person hears it and adjusts.

The ones to worry about are the couples who never fight at all.

During one of my salon visits, a woman mentioned that she had never had a disagreement with her husband in all her decades of marriage. She said whatever he does is his business, and she won't bother him. That unsettled me, because there is no way there won't be things to fix.

To me, that is more like distance.

I have realised that some couples don't fight because they have learnt to communicate effectively. Others don't fight because one person has learnt to swallow everything.

Maybe they are just tired.

That silent partner has stopped mentioning the flung towel, the careless joke, the subtle body shaming after childbirth, the forgotten birthday, the decision made without them.

You just hear things like, "It's fine," and "I don't want trouble."

The house stays quiet. The children see a calm home. Visitors see a happy couple. The church sees a family worthy of emulation.

But that silent partner is like a pot of water on a low fire. It isn't boiling, but it is never off, and it is getting hotter every year.

Peace in the home is not the absence of disagreement. Sometimes it is the absence of permission to disagree.

A healthy marriage should have room for two people to say, "I don't like this," "You hurt me," or "I see this differently," without the relationship immediately becoming a battlefield.

Two adults should be able to disagree on Monday and still share a meal on Monday night. In fact, you should be able to disagree in the morning and still bathe together and lie next to each other at night.

If the peace in your home requires one person to permanently silence themselves, you have left the realm of peace and moved into emotional suppression.

The ugly thing about this suppression is that the silent one usually doesn't stay silent forever. Some go cold and stop caring. Some go distant and start living like roommates. Some finally explode over something as small as a missing spoon, and everybody asks, "Where is all this coming from?"

It was coming from years of things they were never allowed to say.

It is important to know that keeping quiet is not always safe, and that the feelings you express are not noise.

And to the spouse who is always comfortable: make it a point to find out why your partner is so quiet. Is it because they have nothing to say, or because they have learnt it is not safe to say it?

A marriage should not feel like a house where everybody walks on tiptoe.

Your marriage should feel like home.

[NneChukwu! @Okeke_Uz]

As a parent, you need to know that a child who is never allowed to fail does not necessarily become confident. Sometimes you are just raising an adult who has never learned to sit with the consequences of their actions, and may never.

Every little thing sends you into defence and protection mode.

You call to caution the teacher over small issues. You go to their school to physically attack the teacher over a disciplinary measure taken against your child. There is always someone to blame for poor exam scores or rebellious behavior. Someone always fixes their mess.

Then when they grow up and resume at an office where nobody is paid to rescue them, their very first query feels like persecution, and the manager who asks for a report on time is suddenly "toxic."

Guiding children is like holding the seat for a child learning to ride a bicycle. If you always hold it, the child will find it very difficult to learn to balance. And, if you let go too early on a bad road, the child will break a knee.

So the wise parent runs beside the bicycle, lets go on the smooth stretch, and is still close enough to pick the child up when the fall comes.

But there is another side to this teaching that I always love to talk about.

Letting your child face the consequences of their own decisions shouldn't mean leaving them to repeat the mistakes you already made.

You know what it cost you to marry in a hurry, to not take your academics seriously, to not give your savings to a "trusted" friend, to ignore your health until it shouted, to loaf around at 25 and have nothing at 45, or to stay quiet when you should have spoken up.

Those lessons were expensive, and I don't see why your child should go through them again, unless they are bent on learning it the hard way.

There is this lady who got pregnant at 16, in SS2. Her father disowned her. Her lover boy disappeared. And her secondary school quietly asked her not to return.

She sold pure water by the roadside with a baby tied to her back, while her mates finished secondary school and went on to university.

Though she did go back to school in the end, because God is faithful and her mother never gave up on her, but it took 9 years to get what should have taken 4.

As soon as her daughter turned 13, she knew she had to start talking to her. But instead of the usual speech, "Don't let any boy touch you or I will kill you," she sat her daughter down and told her about her life. That even though she was the best thing that ever happened to her, her choice of man was poor.

She told her what her choices cost her, the price she paid, and how she would have given anything to do things differently.

She made sure to equip her daughter with information to guide her into making better choices.

With the type of smart children we are raising these days, honest conversations do more than 100 threats ever would.

As mothers, because we spend more time with these children, we need to give them truth without shame, love them without conditions, and give them ample room to ask questions without fear of being shut down or punished.

A child who can ask you anything will tell you everything, but a child who is afraid of you will learn to lie beautifully.

So it is important that we tell our stories without shame and without a sermon. Tell your child your mistakes, what they cost you, and what you would do differently if God gave you another chance.

Those scars of yours can become their map.

Where the road is one you have already walked, guide them with the truth.

Where the road is theirs to walk, stand beside them, let them feel the weight of their decisions, and help them make sense of it afterwards.

Protect them from your mistakes, and prepare them for their own.

As parents, the greatest gift you can give your child is wisdom from your past and the freedom to learn from their own choices, while you are still close enough to hold their hand.

Selah!

Men hardly experience or receive kindness. Even from their fellow men, let alone from women.

That's why any small act of kindness towards a man is well appreciated.

So, as a woman, what you need more than anything to win a man's commitment is kindness.

That little kind gesture that you did for him can alter the course of your relationship with him for good.

I started primary school at the age of 8 because of relocation.

At 14, I gained admission into secondary school left at 19.

I watched my mates gain admission into universities while I was still struggling to find my way.

At 23, I finally gained admission into the university.

Because of prolonged university strikes, I couldn't graduate until I was 28.

After graduation, I watched others climb the corporate ladder while I waited for my own breakthrough.

I did not marry until I was 35.

My dream job finally came at 36.

I ventured into business, failed repeatedly, lost money, started again, and kept pushing.

My major business breakthrough didn't come until I was over 52.

At 52, I relocated abroad with my family.

And now, at 56, I am preparing to author my first book.

Here is what life has taught me:
Nobody is truly ahead of you, and you are not necessarily behind anyone.

We are all running different races, on different tracks, with different starting points and different timelines.

Good morning to you.

Guys, it is unwise to tell your wife any uncomplimentary thing that your sister or any family member says about her. The animosity will never end.

Be a man and correct your sister or family member and protect your wife, but she doesn’t need to know.

Men are the greatest hypocrites though.

You can get a woman pregnant out of wedlock, but you can't take that if it was your sister.

Every woman is a whore except your sisters and mothers.

You f*ck a minimum of 50 women a year, but you want a chaste woman as wife.

You punch and slap your wife. But fume and fight back when a man hits your sister.

Big hypocrites!
