Have you survived having a loved one deployed to war? I have. Underneath all of the patriotic bravery and consoling idiocy, lies the very real trauma of family separation. 

And when reunion comes, no one is the same. 

Not the veteran - traumatized, morally and emotionally brutalized, heavily adapted to combat. (Domestic violence rates *skyrocket* on military bases when deployments end.) 

Not the parent left behind, who coped, adapted, held the line, took full responsibility, and now has to make room for someone who's beloved, yes, but completely out of sync with the family's life now. 

And not the children. Them, perhaps, least of all. "A raw wound, forever tender to the touch." Yes. Still. Twenty - almost thirty - years after my father's deployments - yes. still. 

Part of Melissa's poem-a-day - a meditation on togetherness, on the truth of our souls, and on the things that do not serve power or money, and therefore, perhaps, serve life.

Wonder how I started writing so deeply? Poems like Bubble Man, Ageless Heresy, and others - three books' worth between the ages of 12 and 17? It had a lot to do with what I was exposed to, when I was young. 

Principles of "Service and Sacrifice," "Liberty and Justice for All," "Government Of, By, and For the People" - these were bread-and-butter dinnertable topics in my family.

Then, over and over, my father's deployments broke our family, even as his career sustained us. And his principled, dedicated commitment to healing, as a doctor, was weaponized for wars that did not truly serve the American Republic... or any of those good principles I already carried in my soul. 

What's a young, heartfelt patriot to do?

Why, of course - strive to take responsibility for helping her country live up to its own ideals.

This is how to vote in Washington State. 

For my fellow Americans in more restrictive states - I feel for you. Long lines, closed polling places, restrictive ID requirements... here we're blessedly free of all of that. I'm at my kitchen table, at home, comfortable, with the Voters Pamphlet at my elbow and my husband beside me. Next time we go out, I'll just drop my finished ballot in the mailbox on the way. AND - best part is - there's a paper trail! No satellite or foreign agent can hack that.

Vote by Mail is awesome, very secure, very convenient, very accessible, and highly recommended. The reason they attack it is because it's BETTER. (Like basically everything they attack.)

When life gets you down... 
...you need a hand up. 

Folks in our community are struggling. 
And I've made it my business to help.

First, in informal ways - chipping in for years, buying people food, paying off their rent, fixing their cars, housing them when they had nowhere else to go - organizing mutual aid support groups, then being mutually pledged to protect and defend each other. 

Then, I literally made it my job. I worked night shifts at the local treatment center, caring for moms who were coming out of addiction, who were only allowed to have their babies with them because they were in treatment. 

...and now? Now I’ve made it my responsibility to help in big ways. 

Because if we want people to not need a hand up?
Let's get the mud, banana peels, boulders, and bullies out of their path. So to speak.

Most of our country's individual crises...
...are downstream from system problems. 

Wage theft. Unaffordable housing, healthcare, transportation. Destruction of the commons. Family breakdown. Wealth inequality. Debt. Loneliness. 
I could go on. 

At the treatment center, I was caring for people who'd been crushed by forces bigger than them. 
(Almost always starting as childhood trauma they couldn't escape.)
But I was doing it one at a time.

In politics, I'm stepping into care that redesigns systems.
Caring for thousands, or hundreds of thousands, or millions, at a time. 

But in order to use that power well...
...I had to know these babies. And their moms.
One at a time. 

Because nothing teaches you how much it matters...
...than spending your nights holding a precious baby who's harmed no one...
...and knowing that whether their childhood carries peace...
...or trauma...
...has everything to do with their mother getting out of addiction...
...just there in the next room.

Dignity. Safety. Opportunity.
For all.

"Wait, Melissa Chaudhry was a farmer?" Yes, folks, yes indeed. I lived, studied, and worked on farms on several continents, focusing on permaculture and food production systems that would survive any kind of crisis the world could throw at us. 

Sometimes, though, all the big worries melted away, and all that needed to be done boiled down to what was in front of me: a shovel, a pickax, a broken pipe, and when I was lucky, a cute kitten keeping me company. 

I'll pull back the curtain and you can see what I've done - from farming, teaching, plumbing, building, and fixing cars, to studying cooperative economics, building resilient food systems, meeting US Military Generals, caring for moms in addiction recovery... and so much more.

5. I will pursue accountability for those who committed war crimes with American weapons — and those at home who facilitated them. I support the International Criminal Court investigating and prosecuting crimes against humanity. I oppose every effort to sanction them.

6. I stand wholeheartedly for the First Amendment — the right to peaceably assemble, to speak freely, to criticize. Economic speech included. Criticizing a foreign government is not bigotry. It is honesty. It is integrity. And I will protect it.

7. I will fight to overturn Citizens United and get corporate and foreign money out of American politics. My campaign has always rejected foreign interests, weapons manufacturers, and corporate PACs. My opponent, Adam Smith — again — takes massive AIPAC money and fills the rest of his war chest with cash from defense contractors and the surveillance industry, including Palantir and Anduril, which makes AI-powered autonomous weapons. The PEACE Pledge. It's a real set of policy commitments, not some vague niceties. Let me break it down in plain language — starting with commitments 1 through 4.

1. No AIPAC donations. I never have accepted them, and I never will.

2. It is a genocide. It has been a genocide. A broad international consensus of scholars and human rights organizations is unequivocal. So am I. My family was at the front of marches, rallies, and peace vigils calling it a genocide the entire time. We've been friends of Rachel Corrie's family for 20 years. Aysenur Ezgi Eygi played with my little daughter in 2024 — shortly before she was murdered in the West Bank while peacefully witnessing.

3. I will never vote for US military assistance to any country engaged in war crimes, ethnic cleansing, apartheid, genocide, or restricting humanitarian aid. Not once. Not ever.

4. I utterly oppose permanently integrating US military or intelligence functions with any foreign country. I stand for American sovereignty and integrity. My father and husband are disabled US military veterans — they swore to defend the United States, not anyone else. My opponent Adam Smith co-introduced Section 224, was personally and publicly thanked by AIPAC for it, killed Ro Khanna's amendment in committee, then flipped in public only when he knew it was too late to matter. Sickening.

I've been a supporter of peace and justice for all people my entire life — including the Palestinian people.

My Norwegian ancestors lived under occupation. My grandfather fought back — and paid for it with two years of torture in a Nazi concentration camp. He came to America and later died of his wounds.

"Ageless Heresy," this one - an elegy for a fallen soldier.

"War is not good for children and other living things." I'd take that old adage from my peace march days, and take it one step further: War is not good. Period. For anything. 

The first casualty of war is the truth - rapidly followed by justice, mercy, dignity, integrity, or kindness. Paid for with blood, treasure, integrity, compliance, betrayal, moral injury, and the soul-crushing pain of the suffering of innocents. 

Surely - surely - we can find better ways to be on a planet together, than this.
