Paradox Interactive's Hearts of Iron 4 has landed in a massive controversy with the Turkish community, and Paradox has responded:
- A Turkish player on the HOI4 Discord with an Atatürk profile picture was banned for his profile picture
- The moderators explained the Atatürk is a "controversial and polarizing" figure and therefore accounts with his photo were not allowed
- Users objecting to the ban were banned as well, new joins to the server were closed
- Turkish players responded overwhelmingly to this, the game is currently at 25,000 negative reviews, dropping the game's rating to "Overwhelmingly Negative" on Steam
- Paradox Interactive's social media accounts have been flooded with demands from Turkish players for an apology
- Turkish players are also making nationwide calls to boycott Hearts of Iron 4 and all of Paradox's games
- HOI4's Game Director Laszlo "Batya" Pieper has issued a statement today, acknowledging Atatürk's importance to Turkish people and that the bans will be reviewed as the rules have not been applied consistently
I am not Turkish, but I am based in Türkiye. And I can confirm that if you spend even a minute in here, you'd understand how important Atatürk is to Turkish people. There are statues of him everywhere, photos of him in every classroom, and he is celebrated in every single corner of this country. Paradox seriously messed up here, especially as games like Hearts of Iron are HUGE in Turkey, and Turkish players represent a massive chunk of this game's player-base.
"Atatürk" is a title that quite literally translates to "Father of the Turks", so that should give you an idea of how important he is to Turks and everyone who lives in Türkiye.
Paradox really should come out with a proper apology ASAP.
