Varisheh Moradi, a Kurdish woman activist, was sentenced to death by Branch 15 of Tehran’s Islamic Revolutionary Court on Sunday, November 10.

Moradi was violently detained on August 1, 2023, pressured into making forced confessions, and held in solitary confinement for nearly five months.

👉 A source familiar with the case told CHRI that presiding Judge Abolqasem Salavati, a notorious hardline judge nicknamed “the Hanging Judge” for handing down death sentences in political cases, did not allow Moradi or her lawyers to present a defense during her trial.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has a long, well-documented history of targeting activists from the marginalized Kurdish community, frequently leveling politically motivated accusations based on fabricated charges.
