For the Blazers, I like this cost for acquiring a premier off-the-catch shooter, while in line with their bet on positional size.

Certainly, the kind of player needed for a team that has been at the bottom of the shot-making charts all season.

Not a good game from Bernardo and Bruno Fernandes, mainly because of their role. These are not players who should just sit on the last line and wait for the ball to arrive. They need to drop deeper, connect the game, and help organize possession.

You can give them this responsibility because they are reliable in possession. They understand risk, protect the ball well, and are unlikely to leave the team exposed with unnecessary turnovers. João Neves can provide the balance by arriving from deeper positions, attacking the box, and giving the midfield more presence in the final third.

Portugal will improve if Bernardo and Bruno can take more touches, especially because their counter-pressing will become stronger. This is an area where Portugal still need to improve. When they are pinned back, they are not as comfortable as teams like France, for example, who are much more effective defending in deeper situations.

On the other hand, I liked Nuno Mendes’ role. Portugal looked very dangerous when he was arriving from the second line. It was a good idea to let him attack only in certain moments because he is too important in rest defence to allow him to constantly attack and leave spaces behind.

Another option Portugal could explore is creating overloads on the right side with Bernardo, Bruno, Cancelo, Vitinha, and João Neves, then finding isolated Rafael Leão or Neto on the left. This would also create the space for Nuno Mendes to make dynamic runs from deep.

Leão is not a player who naturally thrives in combinations; he is at his best when he can attack defenders individually and use large spaces.

Martínez has Vitinha, Joao Neves, Bruno and Bernardo whose biggest strengths are connection play, combining in tight spaces, controlling central areas.

And he decides to keep them far away from each other with leaving the midfield empty.

Pessoal, acho muito injusto e uma falta de respeito dizer que "jogámos com 10".

Ele também meteu-se no caminho de jogadas e lixou o espaçamento de outras. Isso é mais negativo que não estar lá ninguém.

So é pena que o custo disso seja, competição após competição, afundar uma geração destas.

Uma equipa com um meio campo que ganhou uma liga dos campeões e imenso talento ofensivo está a ser sacrificada para o ego de um reformado que se recusa a aceitar o seu estado.

Bem, desinspirada 1a parte mas vantagem é vantagem.

Alguma passividade quando havia abertura para tentativas de 'killer balls' para as costas da defesa.

O Martínez faz TUDO excepto tirar o Ronaldo. Se tirarmos a emoção disto e como estamos a desperdiçar todo este talento, é genuinamente hilariante. É um dos melhores comedy bits recorrentes que já vi na vida.

@LawMurrayTheNU The thing with me is that I was already underwhelmed by Fox in the earlier rounds. I expected a lot more than what I saw in his minutes without Wemby, in termos of his creation and decisions. Haven't checked if data backs it up but it's been in my live notes across those games.
