Abigail Spanberger, the careful Democrat, won’t renounce her party’s attorney general nominee.

Norfolk, Va. Democrat Abigail Spanberger is the favorite in Virginia’s race for governor. The commonwealth’s odd-year elections tend to favor the party that isn’t in the White House, and Northern Virginia is full of federal employees. She has millions more in campaign cash than her Republican opponent, Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Ms. Spanberger, a mother of three and former CIA officer, is a candidate from central casting for appealing to suburban swing votes. She is up 6.5 points in the latest Real Clear Politics average. [She eventually won the election].

Yet for all her advantages, Ms. Spanberger looked uncomfortable in the contest’s only debate, on Thursday at Norfolk State University. That’s doubtless because the biggest story of the past week has involved Jay Jones, the Democratic nominee for attorney general, fantasizing in leaked text messages about the murder of a political opponent and his family.

“He receives both bullets every time,” Mr. Jones told a then-colleague about a Republican, in texts that much of the country has now seen.

When the moderator asked Ms. Spanberger if she still supports Mr. Jones, she dodged: “Voters now have the information, and it is up to voters to make an individual choice based on this information.”

She denounced his words as “absolutely abhorrent.” But when pressed, she repeated her nonanswer.

Ms. Sears [a black female republican who ran a clean campaign], a Marine veteran who came to America from Jamaica at age 6, hammered the point. “You are taking political calculations about your future as governor,” she said to Ms. Spanberger, who stared stiffly into the auditorium as Ms. Sears talked.

“Well, as governor, you have to make hard choices, and that means telling Jay Jones to leave the race.”

In an interview the next day at a campaign office near Richmond, Ms. Sears says Mr. Jones’s texts leave voters wondering: “Well, I’m a Republican. Do you want to kill me too? And you’re running to be attorney general?”

The effect of the scandal may be muted: Voting in Virginia started Sept. 19, which is a reminder that a monthslong Election Day denies voters an informed choice. But the contests are important as a moment of Democratic identity and for the future of Virginia after four years of incremental GOP achievement under Gov. Glenn Youngkin.

The Jones mess is a microcosm of larger Democratic fissures. Ms. Spanberger told her Democratic congressional colleagues on a 2020 conference call never to “use the word ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again” and to refrain from endorsing demands to “defund” the police.

“I’ve heard from colleagues who have said, ‘Oh, it’s the language of the streets. We should respect that,’ ” she said. “We are in Congress. We are professionals. . . . If we don’t mean we should defund the police, we shouldn’t say that.”

Ms. Spanberger is largely following her own sensible advice. She is campaigning mostly on economic issues, churning out policy plans full of vague aspirations. (“Make it easier for Virginians to map potential career paths and connect with employers.”

“Give cities and counties the flexibility they need to build more housing.”) A GOP consultant quips she’s running “the ‘Seinfeld’ campaign, a campaign about nothing.”

Yet if her aim is to be acceptable at a moms’ book club in Fairfax or Short Pump, why won’t she ditch Mr. Jones?

One of the most remarkable features of Mr. Jones’s violent texts is that he says he has thought the matter through.

“I’ve told you this before,” Mr. Jones writes: “Only when people feel pain personally do they move on policy.”

That sentiment—politics as an existential struggle against evil—has seeped deep into the Democratic psyche.

Ms. Spanberger might have concluded that she can’t dump Mr. Jones without enraging the party’s base. She might be right. In that 2020 conference call, another lawmaker said: “To be real, it sounds like you are saying stop pushing for what black folks want.”

Ms. Sears heckled Ms. Spanberger throughout the debate, and it was grating. But in the current low-attention economy, debates have devolved into a competition for social-media clips, and few voters will digest the full hour.This prevailing narrative underrates Ms. Sears and her political chemistry. Her biggest asset is her lifetime of hard work, whether as a Marine or owning an appliance business. While putting herself through college, she discovered that a Virginian could legally sell up to six cars a year without a business license. So she did, combing “through the Auto Trader magazine,” she writes in her 2023 memoir. That personal story makes her credible where many Republicans struggle. Her best answer during our conversation is about the GOP’s changes to Medicaid in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

“The bill is trying to bring Medicaid back to its original purpose,” she says. “If you’re going to have Medicaid, if you’re able-bodied—simple, this is not hard—if you’re able-bodied, then you must have some form of productivity. And the requirement is 80 hours of work, or 80 hours of training, or 80 hours of volunteering, or something. And you know, a whole bunch of us are working more than 80 hours a month.”

“When I ran a women’s homeless shelter,” she continues, “I myself was driving the women to jobs, to training, to appointments, to wherever, because I wanted them to restart their life. What if I said: ‘No, stay in the shelter and just waste away’? That’s what our government is going to help the citizens to do—waste your life away? I’m not going to help anyone to do that.”

Ms. Sears’s most effective line about Ms. Spanberger in the debate: “She has no courage.” Ms. Spanberger later demurred on a question about whether boys who say they are transgender should be allowed to use girls’ bathrooms and play on girls’ sports teams in public schools. “I think it’s important that we have parents and teachers and administrators making decisions about their individual schools, not politicians,” Ms. Spanberger said.

Ms. Sears has made girls’ sports a central theme of her campaign, which probably revs up GOP voters. A further risk for Ms. Spanberger is that her dodges contribute to a wider perception that she lacks candor.The base case is that Ms. Sears loses. The bull case is that her unorthodox style can attract those who don’t vote regularly and peel off minority voters from Ms. Spanberger. But if Ms. Sears can hold the race within a few points, Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares could still prevail over Mr. Jones. Mr. Miyares, whose mother fled Cuba, has the advantage of incumbency. His public-safety platform is attractive to the suburban women who dislike Mr. Trump but don’t want chaos in streets or schools.

Ms. Spanberger at the debate had clearly internalized that her chief aim was to avoid a mistake like Terry McAuliffe’s self-immolation in the 2021 gubernatorial debate with Mr. Youngkin. “I don’t think parents should be telling schools what they should teach,” Mr. McAuliffe said.Then again, caution carries its own political liabilities. At the end of the debate, the moderators posed the dreaded “fun” question: Who is your favorite U.S. president from Virginia? “As a UVA alumna, I’m going to have to go with Thomas Jefferson,” Ms. Spanberger said. Why? “Because he started the university, with all due respect to graduates of other universities.”

The head of the BBC and its top news executive resigned on Nov 9 after the broadcaster was accused of misleading viewers by editing President Donald Trump’s speech on Jan. 6, 2021.

The BBC confirmed it was cutting ties with Director-General Tim Davie and CEO of News Deborah Turness in a series of statements on Nov. 9.

“I wanted to let you know that I have decided to leave the BBC after 20 years,” Davie wrote in a letter to staff members on Nov. 9. “This is entirely my decision, and I remain very thankful to the Chair and Board for their unswerving and unanimous support throughout my entire tenure, including during recent days.”

Davie, who worked at the BBC for 20 years, did not announce when he would leave his post but said in a statement that he will help bring in a successor.
“In these increasingly polarised times, the BBC is of unique value and speaks to the very best of us. It helps make the UK a special place; overwhelmingly kind, tolerant and curious. Like all public organisations, the BBC is not perfect, and we must always be open, transparent and accountable,” Davie said.

Turness commented on the scandal in her resignation letter sent to staff on Nov. 9.
“The ongoing controversy around the Panorama on President Trump has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC—an institution that I love,” Turness wrote.
“As the CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs, the buck stops with me—and I took the decision to offer my resignation to the Director-General last night.”
“Panorama” is the BBC’s flagship news program.

Turness continued: “In public life leaders need to be fully accountable, and that is why I am stepping down. While mistakes have been made, I want to be absolutely clear [that] recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong.”

The news corporation was accused of selectively editing the speech Trump made on the day of the 2021 U.S. Capitol breach in its broadcast on Oct. 28, 2024, titled “Donald Trump: A Second Chance?”

The “Panorama” episode, which aired one week before the 2024 presidential election, spliced together two clips from the speech, creating the impression that Trump said, “We’re gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be with you / and we fight, we fight like hell, and if you don’t fight like hell, you’re not gonna have a country anymore.”

The BBC was accused of editing the separate remarks to mislead viewers.
Trump actually said: “We are gonna walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be with you. I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol Building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

New York state Attorney General Letitia James was indicted Thursday by a federal grand jury in Virginia on charges of bank fraud and making false claims to a financial institution that netted her nearly $19,000 in savings on a loan for a second home, according to the Department of Justice.

The indictment was handed up in the Eastern District of Virginia, where former FBI Director James Comey was indicted Sept. 25 on charges of lying to Congress and obstruction of justice

“No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” US Attorney Lindsey Halligan said in a statement. “The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served.”

James responded in a statement: “This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system. He is forcing federal law enforcement agencies to do his bidding, all because I did my job as the New York State Attorney General.”

“These charges are baseless, and the president’s own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost,” she added. “The president’s actions are a grave violation of our Constitutional order and have drawn sharp criticism from members of both parties.”

NY AG Letitia James has been indicted. If convicted on both counts, James faces up to 60 years in prison and a fine of up to $2 million.

James, 66, bought the three-bedroom, one-bathroom Norfolk, Va., home in August 2020 for roughly $137,000, most of which was financed with a $109,600 loan that prohibited it from being used as a rental investment property, prosecutors alleged.

That allowed her “to obtain favorable loan terms not available for investment properties,” they noted in the five-page filing, saving her “approximately $18,933 over the life of the loan.”

When a Post reporter visited the Norfolk home in April, neighbors said they had never seen James at the property. Meanwhile, her income tax forms designated the home as a rental that brought in thousands of dollars in additional income.
Norfolk property records reviewed earlier this year by The Post show James granted power of attorney to her niece, Shamice Thompson-Hairston, on Aug. 17, 2023, authorizing the purchase of the Virginia property — for which they secured a $219,780 mortgage.

Thursday’s indictment puts the timeline of the alleged bank fraud scheme from August 2020 to January 2024 “for the purpose of influencing the action of OVM Financial, a Fannie Mae-backed lender, upon an application for a loan.”

James “represented and affirmed in uniform residential loan applications and related documents that the Peronne Property would be used as a secondary residence, when in truth and fact, as [James] then knew, the property was intended and used as an investment property with no intended or actual personal occupancy or use by her,” the indictment alleged.

Federal housing regulator Bill Pulte referred James to the Justice Department in April, suggesting that she had committed crimes including wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud and false statements to a financial institution.
James had previously called the allegations by Pulte “baseless.”

“What we’re seeing today is nothing less than the weaponization of the Justice Department to punish those who hold the powerful accountable,” Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in a statement.

James won a civil judgment against the Trump Organization last year for allegedly inflating the value of his real estate empire. The president was ordered to pay $355 million in penalties but successfully appealed in August to have the fine thrown out.

James’ office has appealed for reinstatement of the judgment, which had grown to more than $500 million with interest.

“I stand strongly behind my office’s litigation against the Trump Organization,” James added in her Thursday statement. “Judges have upheld the trial court’s finding that Donald Trump, his company, and his two sons are liable for fraud.”

“I am a proud woman of faith, and I know that faith and fear cannot share the same space,” she added. “And so today I am not fearful, I am fearless, and as my faith teaches me, no weapon formed against me shall prosper. We will fight these baseless charges aggressively, and my office will continue to fiercely protect New Yorkers and their rights. And I will continue to do my job.”

FBI investigators began the criminal probe in May after Pulte’s referral, which also contained allegations of James misclassifying her Brooklyn brownstone as having four units instead of five.

That could have given her more favorable loan terms on both the New York and Virginia properties, according to Pulte.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency head has also made similar accusations of mortgage fraud against Sen. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) for improperly claiming a home in Maryland was his primary residence.

Erik Siebert, who preceded Halligan as US attorney, resigned last month after declining to bring charges against Comey and James.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – Georgia’s judicial watchdog is recommending the removal of a Fulton County Superior Court judge accused of multiple violations of professional conduct rules, including the illegal jailing of a 21-year-old woman who had been called as a witness in her parents’ divorce case.
Superior Court Judge Shermela Williams violated professional conduct rules in her handling of multiple cases, the hearing panel of the Georgia Judicial Qualifications Commission reported Thursday. The 66-page report, published on the Georgia Supreme Court’s website, recommends the court remove Williams from the job she’s had since January 2021.
The three-member JQC panel said the outrageousness of Williams’ conduct speaks for itself, and it had been difficult getting a straight answer out of her during an associated investigation and trial-like hearing.
“She broke the law in a way that is inexcusable,” the panel wrote about Williams’ jailing of 21-year-old Molly Dennis in October 2023, noting it happened while Williams knew she was under investigation for separate complaints. “Either she just did not care, or that was her best behavior.”
Williams’ lawyers said she is deeply disappointed by the panel’s recommendation, which she will challenge. The lawyers, Gabe Banks and Jamala McFadden, said Williams remains committed to serving the Fulton citizens who elected her.
Banks and McFadden wrote in a statement Friday: “If the Supreme Court adopts the Panel’s recommendation, Judge Williams’ removal would be against the will of the voters and a loss to the citizens of Fulton County.”
The judge previously acknowledged she was wrong to order that Dennis be handcuffed and placed in a holding cell at the Fulton courthouse, explaining she wanted to teach the young woman a lesson. Williams also admitted she let some family cases drag on for more than a year while the parties waited for her to make rulings.
The JQC panel said the case delays were the least troubling of Williams’ instances of misconduct, though still serious.
The panel wrote: “From a man who was hungry and homeless and could not get necessary medical treatment, to a mother who mightily struggled financially for almost three years awaiting a child support ruling, to a father whose entire relationship with his children for years was a single ten-minute FaceTime call per week, the consequences were significant and outsized. These parties were denied the certainty, stability, and relief that they deserved from the judicial system.”
Williams now has the opportunity to object to the panel’s recommendation and convince the state Supreme Court she deserves to stay on the bench. She previously told the JQC that a reprimand or short suspension would be an appropriate sanction.
In its report, the panel said Williams also violated judicial ethics rules in handling a child custody case involving a Delta Sigma Theta sorority sister and by trying to use her influence as a judge to help her uncle in his court case.
The panel said it did not expect Williams to be perfect, but that her “stunning lack of candor” was disappointing.
The panel wrote: “Given the level of untruthful testimony Judge Williams offered throughout, we are left with little option but to seek the ultimate sanction of removal. A judge that cannot be trusted to tell the truth cannot be trusted to remain in office.”
