Following the death of Archbishop Augustine Akubeze of Benin Archdiocese, Nigeria, the Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV has appointed Bishop Donatus Ogun, O.S.A, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Uromi as the Apostolic Administrator of Benin Archdiocese.

I have just received the information, confirmed by the Catholic Secretary of Nigeria, that His Grace, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze, the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City, has passed on to glory. He died yesterday, 9th July.

I remember seeing a video of his visit to some priests in England just a couple of days ago. Life is so fragile.

This is deeply sad and must be devastating for his archdiocese, its priests, religious, lay faithful, and his immediate family.

Augustine Obiora Akubeze was born on 25 August 1956. Ordained a priest in 1987, he was appointed the first Bishop of Uromi in 2005 before becoming the Metropolitan Archbishop of Benin City in 2011. He also served as President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) from 2018 to 2022, where he was a respected voice for evangelisation, justice, peace, and good governance in Nigeria.

He has served well.
May his soul rest in perfect peace. Amen 🙏🏽

Prayer for Mercy:
Merciful Father, on this Mercy Tuesday, I run to Your heart, where mercy never runs dry. You know my battles, my secret prayers, and every longing in my heart. I rest in the promise of Psalm 16 that in Your presence there is fullness of joy.
I receive an unshakeable joy. Joy that survives my waiting season, outlives my disappointments, and overcomes my sorrows.
Thank You for never giving up on me. Thank You for loving me even on the days I struggle to love myself. May Your mercy remain my strength, and may my heart always find its joy in You. Amen
